Overview
Safety Manager – Festus, MO osing is a general contractor with extensive experience in heavy civil/industrial construction, including highways, bridges, utilities, water/wastewater facilities, and marine construction.
For over 70 years Kokosing has attracted qualified technical personnel by offering challenging work, quality, and rewards. This role leads the Safety and Health Management System at the assigned location, ensuring regulatory compliance and championing a behavioral-based safety program.
Responsibilities- Lead and monitor the Company Safety and Health Program at the assigned location(s); drive regulatory compliance as outlined in the Safety and Health Management System.
- Provide operational leadership by actively participating in daily operations, guiding safety staff, and promoting teamwork and continuous improvement across safety initiatives.
- Supervise, mentor, and manage safety staff; foster a collaborative environment; set expectations and accountability for safety performance.
- Coordinate audits, inspections, and safety conversations; coach operations managers to implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Lead incident investigations and analyses; ensure timely and quality documentation of injuries, illnesses, and general liability incidents; collaborate with operations to reduce recurrence.
- Develop and execute mitigation strategies to reduce injuries and incidents; propose and support process improvements based on safety performance data.
- Analyze safety data from audits, inspections, conversations, incidents, and training to support continuous improvement.
- Plan and conduct safety meetings and training programs; share best practices with project teams, facilities, or regions.
- Collaborate with Safety leadership to develop, organize, and implement safety policies, procedures, and trainings that advance the Safety and Health Management System.
- Coordinate project safety programs with subcontractors, vendors, and third-party personnel; participate in pre-construction and coordination meetings.
- Serve as a point of contact for federal, state, or municipal safety or risk management authorities and for client communications; assist with incident investigations to minimize loss.
- Bachelor’s degree in safety and health or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
- 10+ years of experience in safety and health within the construction industry preferred.
- Understanding of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, EPA regulations and company safety policies
- Ability to manage multiple locations, lead and prioritize safety program tasks
- Experience coaching, conducting, and documenting safety audits and inspections
- Strong PC skills (MS Office, SharePoint, Power BI, etc.)
- Excellent organization and record-keeping abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication; ability to convey safety concepts to diverse stakeholders
- Ability to coach staff to apply safety metrics and drive results
- Experience identifying training needs and root cause analysis to support proactive interventions
- Capability to work in a high-production environment (50+ hours/week, including nights and weekends) with the ability to respond quickly under pressure
- Proactive coaching and guidance of safety staff; ability to set priorities and explain performance expectations
- Independent thinking and ability to influence operations management on corrective/preventive actions
- Strong judgment to troubleshoot and resolve day-to-day safety issues; promote a safe work environment
- Ability to mentor, develop, and grow safety staff; foster learning and professional development
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; ability to convey safety concepts to various audiences
- Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with industry trends
- Role model with integrity and honesty
- Valid Driver’s License with good driving record
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred
- OSHA 30-Hour and 10-Hour Trainer certifications preferred
- GSP, ASP, CSP, or CHST designation preferred
- Exposure to varied weather and in-office settings
- Extended walking, standing, climbing, or bending while inspecting work areas
- Navigate around heavy equipment and hazardous materials; may require lifting up to 50 lbs
- Some travel may be required
