Overview

Hilljack House, Inc. (hilljackhouse.org) is seeking a Director to lead the organization. This role is ideal for a mission-driven leader who is ready to grow into leadership with strong board partnership and mentoring. Compensation reflects the organization’s current size and resources, with opportunities for increased compensation as the organization grows.

Organization Overview

Hilljack House, Inc. provides a safe and supportive environment in the St. Louis area where people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction can learn to live responsibly through sponsorship and the principles of 12-step recovery. The organization operates six recovery houses serving approximately 46 residents and is committed to building futures one day at a time.

Position Summary

The Director provides overall leadership and day-to-day management of Hilljack House, Inc. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Director ensures mission alignment, operational effectiveness, and long-term financial sustainability in alignment with Board-established priorities. This full-time role balances program quality, organizational growth, and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities Organizational Leadership & Strategy
  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction in partnership with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and implement short-term and long-term strategic plans, with measurable goals and outcomes, to advance the mission and strengthen organizational effectiveness.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for Hilljack House.
Program Operations & Quality Management
  • Oversee daily operations of six recovery houses, ensuring safe, compliant, and supportive environments for residents.
  • Ensure programs align with 12-step recovery principles and best practices in recovery housing.
  • Monitor outcomes and implement improvements to enhance resident stability, completion, and success.
Staff Management & Development
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate staff while fostering a collaborative, mission-driven culture.
  • Maintain clear communication, appropriate staff levels, and opportunities for professional development.
Financial Management & Sustainability
  • Lead and oversee fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Board of Directors and volunteers.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and bookkeeper.
  • Ensure sound fiscal management, appropriate internal controls, transparent reporting, and diverse revenue streams.
Board Relations & Governance Support
  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to advance organizational goals and priorities.
  • Prepare reports and attend Board meetings, providing updates on operations and finances.
  • Support Board development, policy implementation, and compliance with bylaws.
Community Relations & Partnerships
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners and referral sources.
  • Represent Hilljack House at community events and meetings to increase visibility and awareness.
  • Collaborate with recovery, treatment, and social service organizations.
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate insurance, risk management, and documentation practices, including timely communication with the Board regarding significant risks or incidents.
  • Stay informed of legal and regulatory changes affecting recovery housing.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Minimum of five years overseeing staff and residential housing
  • Experience with fundraising, financial oversight, and nonprofit operations
  • Strong communication skills and proficiency with office technology
  • Personal experience with recovery and knowledge of substance use disorders, 12-step principles and recovery systems
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to work flexible hours
Preferred
  • Experience managing residential programs or recovery housing
  • Familiarity with the St. Louis nonprofit or recovery community
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors
  • Certification in addiction counseling or nonprofit management
Work Environment & Schedule
  • Full-time position requiring approximately 40+ hours per week, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Regular visits to recovery houses and interaction with residents.
  • Travel within the St. Louis metropolitan area for meetings, events, and site visits.
Compensation

$60,000–$68,000 annually, commensurate with experience, plus a benefits package including: paid time off and employer contributions to employee’s health insurance premiums and individual retirement account.
