Position: Registered Nurse - Med Surg 9S Bordley - Nights
Location: St. Louis

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse is a professional practitioner who assesses, manages, directs, and provides nursing care activities during the patient’s hospital stay and coordinates planning with other disciplines utilizing a patient/customer driven approach.

Responsibilities
  • Assessment
    • Performs comprehensive and age-appropriate admission, transfer, and post‑op reassessments.
    • Documents findings accurately and completely.
    • Evaluates education and discharge needs upon admission and throughout hospitalization.
  • Care Planning
    • Identifies short- and long-term goals based on assessment data, patient diagnosis, and physician orders.
    • Forms nursing interventions and incorporates evidence‑based practice into the care plan.
  • Nursing Interventions
    • Collaborates with the health team to coordinate the daily care plan for assigned patients.
    • Administers medications and documents them accurately.
    • Monitors IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, and maintains accurate documentation.
    • Provides patient and family education and discharge planning per guidelines.
    • Communicates hand‑off reports and clarifies physician orders.
  • Documentation and Communication
    • Records ongoing evaluation of care effectiveness, patient response to medications, and changes in status.
    • Reports significant changes, problems, and variations in care per policy.
  • Specialized Care
    • Restraint care: initiates/evaluates alternatives, applies restraints, monitors response, and documents use.
    • Pain management: assesses pain, incorporates cultural beliefs, implements preventive techniques, and involves family.
    • Abuse assessment: recognizes criteria, reports signs, and supports patient safety.
  • Professional Accountability
    • Adheres to quality, safety, and performance standards.
    • Participates in learning, shared governance, and unit activities to maintain competence.
    • Adapts to changing work demands and supports colleagues.
  • Team Collaboration
    • Orientates or precepts new staff when required.
    • Serves as a resource to colleagues, patients, families, and the health team.
    • Supervises and teaches students or new staff nurses.
  • Safety and Infection Control
    • Follows standard precautions, hand hygiene, and safe patient‑handling techniques.
    • Maintains a safe, clean, and clutter‑free environment.
    • Reports risk‑management concerns using eSRM and completes annual mandatory training.
  • Service Excellence
    • Provides courteous, respectful service, meeting physical and emotional needs.
    • Responds promptly to patient requests and maintains confidentiality.
    • Delivers accurate hand‑off reports and shares knowledge to improve workflow.
    • Uses resources wisely and recommends efficient practices.
  • Performance Improvement
    • Assists in developing unit goals and participates in data collection.
    • Leads or participates in improvement teams and reviews outcomes.
    • Engages in nursing research and departmental improvement activities.
  • Age‑Appropriate Care
    • Applies knowledge of development for adult and geriatric populations.
    • Interprets age‑specific data to identify patient needs and involves family in decisions.
  • Qualifications
    • Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Completed required annual training, including BLS, infection control, and safety protocols.
    • Ability to work irregular hours, handle emergency situations, and lift patients.
    Job Specifications
    • Working Conditions: May be exposed to blood borne diseases; subject to unpredictable situations; handles emergencies and crises; irregular hours.
    • Physical Requirements: Occasional prolonged standing/walking; occasional lifting, pushing, and transferring patients; occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
