RN Research Nurse Coordinator I (Hybrid) - Neurology

Washington University in St. Louis is recruiting a RN Research Nurse Coordinator I (Hybrid) for the Neurology research program.

Position Summary

Dr. Randall Bateman’s lab investigates the causes, future diagnosis and treatments of Alzheimer’s disease utilizing a wide variety of assays and techniques ranging from basic applications, such as quantitative measurement of stable‑isotope labeled peptides, to clinical translational studies in diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease. The lab has an ongoing clinical study to collect matched blood and cerebrospinal fluid from patients with memory concerns in the clinic, and a study called the Study to Understand Novel Biomarkers in Researching Dementia (SUNBIRD) to validate blood biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease in a large clinic‑based cohort.

This position is a member of a multidisciplinary research team and performs duties associated with the coordination and implementation of research studies/projects, data collection, and the management of data generated by study protocols. Responsibilities include assessment of research participants and interactions with participants, family, and caregivers in a research setting. The position interacts with participants who have mild to moderate dementia and healthy control volunteers, and involves on‑call duties as needed to coordinate brain autopsies.

Job Description Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs research study and clinical procedures including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of participants to generate study data according to established protocols; collects data (basic health information and vital signs), performs blood draws; assists with a neurological lumbar puncture (spinal tap) and documents as required; monitors and manages participants in the inpatient research unit; assists principal investigators and physicians.
  • Works with staff to identify, screen, and enroll study participants; serves as the contact person for participants; provides education to participants, families, and caregivers about the studies, dementia, and dementia care; operates on a rotating call schedule for brain donation and brain autopsy coordination.
  • Provides education to clinical providers and participants on study procedures and test results.
  • Prepares and submits event reports in adherence with study procedures, budget, and established guidelines.
  • Performs other duties incidental to the work described, such as training and overseeing students, and reviewing scientific literature to keep abreast of new developments.

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois, depending on location.
  • Basic Life Support certification (must include skills assessment).
Certifications / Professional Licenses
  • Basic Life Support – American Heart Association.
  • Basic Life Support – American Red Cross.
  • Registered Nurse – Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  • Registered Nurse – Missouri Division of Professional Registration.
Work Experience

No specific work experience required for this position, but clinical research experience (1 year) is preferred.
