Overview

Senior Scientist - Genetics role at Washington University in St. Louis.

Position Summary:

The Senior Scientist in the Cremins Lab will oversee and implement specific research projects, participate in collaborative projects, and develop experimental protocols and cell/molecular biology standards for the laboratory. Projects involve genome engineering (degrons, dTAG systems, Cas9, Cas
13, dCas, CRISPRoff, CRISPRon, and other emerging molecular technologies) and leading experiments differentiating human iPSCs to neurons or organoids. The candidate will work on both genome engineering and cell biology, standardize pipelines, mentor trainees, assist with manuscript preparation, and contribute to grant writing.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborates on designing, conducting, and reporting of research projects.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting. Guides lab members to write and edit methods sections and figures for research papers where the analysis is used in the manuscript.
  • Prepares and submits papers on research. Leads multiple papers and major research papers central to the laboratory's goals.
  • Collaborates with computational experts to conduct efficient analyses leading to discovery in mammalian neuron genome structure–function data. Trains to run code used to analyze genomic and imaging data (e.g., methylation analysis, Hi-C/Micro-C data, and peak calling for Cut&Run/CUT&Tag).
  • Responsible for deliverables of the lab genome engineering subTeam, including strategy selection, protocol development, experimental design, validation, and training of others in key assays.
  • Develops hypotheses and determines how to test them. Oversees and writes SOPs for computational algorithms for iPSC differentiation to neurons, organoids, and assembloids.
  • Maintains safety documentation and lab records. Manages research projects with other institutions and investigators.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
  • Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical, and radioactive hazards.
  • Must be able to wear protective equipment and provide standard care to research animals if required.
Education & Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

PhD or terminal degree or a combination of education and experience that may substitute for minimum education.

Certifications:

No specific certification is required for this position.

Work Experience:

Postdoctoral (3 years).

Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in cell biology, genome engineering/biotechnology, or neuroscience (highly preferred).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a complex, high-energy environment with respect for all lab members.
  • Experience in CRISPR and genome engineering; iPSC culture, brain organoids, neuron characterization, computational biology, or in vivo AAV/lentivirus injections.
  • Some experience with Python/R, Linux, and cluster computing.
  • Ability to work independently with critical thinking and sound judgment.
Benefits & Additional Information

Salary Range: $63,400.00 - $ / Annually. The salary range reflects base salaries for positions in a given job grade across the University; actual rate depends on qualifications and performance.
