Position: Facilities Technician II (In-House Painter) - OFMD
Location: St. Louis

Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department (OFMD) at WashU Medicine maintains and operates more than 65 buildings on the campus, ensuring a safe and efficient environment for patient care, research, and education. Guided by the PRIDE+ Core Values—Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Excellence, and Mutual Support—OFMD delivers operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management across the university’s facilities. The In‑House Painter is responsible for performing a wide range of painting and finishing tasks to maintain and enhance the appearance and durability of university facilities.

This includes applying various coatings—latex, oil‑based primers, epoxy, stains, and varnishes—using brush, roller, and spray techniques, stenciling, and window film applications. The role also involves repairing drywall, plaster, and floor surfaces to ensure high‑quality finishes that meet established standards.

Schedule

40 hours per week.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Applies latex, water‑based pre‑catalyzed, and oil‑based primer paints; 2‑part epoxy; oil‑based stain; and quick‑dry varnish.
  • Painting skills: safely uses ladders, scaffolding, and proper lifting techniques; applies brushes, rollers, spray coatings, stenciling, and window film. Performs occasional touch‑ups of office furniture and stains/finishes to match existing wall color.
  • Repairs: damages to drywall, plaster, and ceilings; caulking; painted and epoxied floor surfaces; ensures wall finishes meet acceptable standards.
  • Collaborates with university faculty and staff to recommend paints, finishes, and colors based on customer needs.
  • Provides accurate estimates for labor and materials.
  • Responds to off‑hour/weekend/holiday emergency pages and phone calls for assigned areas.
  • Communicates project timelines to customers, minimizing work interruptions to daily operations.
  • Utilizes work‑order software, email, and other office programs to manage workload and communicate with customers.
  • Verifies that facility conditions are restored, customer needs are met, and task status is documented daily.
  • Keeps Facilities Engineering Supervisors informed about facility conditions, issues, and needs.
  • Maintains effective communication with other Facility Maintenance Technicians and Maintenance Support Staff.
  • Documents completion of work orders, identifies time and material spent, and provides cost estimates for projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education & Qualifications
  • Required

    Qualification:

    High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Required Experience: 2 years in general maintenance or a skilled trade function.
  • Driver’s License: Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) with a good driving record.
  • Certification: None required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years of professional painting experience, preferably in a medical, research, or higher‑education setting.
  • Proficient with taping compounds and level 3 finish work.
  • Scissor or aerial lift card.
  • Technical painting and preparation skills.
  • Critical safety and compliance knowledge.
  • Operational and logistical skills.
Preferred Education & Certifications
  • Vocational diploma in a specific trade or career.
  • No additional certifications required.
Preferred Work Experience
