Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver’s license will be considered for this position.

Incumbents in this position perform semi‑skilled labor and equipment operation in the Streets, Refuse, Parks, Forestry, and Facilities Maintenance Departments throughout the City of St. Louis.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Maintains streets and alleys; removes obstructions and smooths asphalt.
  • Performs leaf pickup and snow removal duties.
  • Distributes asphalt and develops grades.
  • Operates jackhammer to remove street obstructions, curbs, etc.
  • Mows, trims, edges and fertilizes grass using mowers, line trimmers, spreaders, and other tools and equipment.
  • Removes litter and debris, and maintains shrubs, flowerbeds and ground cover by weeding, applying pesticides and pruning.
  • Loads, hauls and unloads bulky items, soil, rock, debris, and plant material using dump trucks, loaders, forklifts and other equipment.
  • Removes trees/shrubs and prepares plant beds for planting.
  • Repairs, paints and assembles dumpsters.
  • Erects, installs, replaces and maintains street signs.
  • May operate stock or trash truck, snowplow, salt spreader, leaf VAC, front loader, forklift, welding torch, shovel and other hand tools as needed.
  • Performs other semi‑skilled and unskilled duties such as digging holes, mixing gravel, back‑filling trenches, opening and closing floodgates, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Data Utilization: Compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.
  • Human Interaction: Follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from supervisors.
  • Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Operate and perform complex rapid adjustments on equipment, machinery and tools such as dump trucks, mowers, trimmers, pruners, tractors, hand excavating tools, tillers, loaders, forklift and related materials.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as work orders, safety regulations, material safety data sheets, diagrams, correspondence and general operating manuals.
  • Mathematical Aptitude: Perform addition and subtraction; calculate surface area and volume; perform basic geometric operations.
  • Functional Reasoning: Apply principles of rational systems; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form; exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards.
  • Situational Reasoning: Exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity when evaluating information against measurable or verifiable criteria.
  • Environmental Factors: Work may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, noise extremes, machinery vibrations, animals/wildlife and toxic agents.
  • Physical Requirements: Perform moderately physically demanding landscaping duties that include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects up to 100 pounds; stand for long periods.
  • Sensory Requirements: Recognize colors, shapes, sounds, tastes, odors and textures associated with job‑related objects; identify dead plant materials, hazards, irregular plant materials, weeds, malfunctions and chemicals.
Qualifications

Must be at least 16 years of age at the time of application and possess a valid driver’s license.

License: Maintain a valid driver’s license while employed; present license upon request. Type of license, number, class and expiration date required on the employment application.

All positions require a valid driver’s license; some may require a commercial driver’s license or CDL permit (Class A or

B).

Preferences
  • A Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or

    B) or CDL Permit is highly preferred.
  • One year of experience in general manual labor, grounds‑keeping or construction work; or one season with the City of St. Louis as a Utility Worker.
