The eligible list for this position will be used for filling seasonal Recreation Assistant vacancies. Positions are limited-term, paid on an hourly basis, and they are not covered by the Employee Benefits Program. At the end of the season, the department can offer the opportunity to return to work the next season and career seasonal status.
Employees who have a Class "C" CDL with Passenger endorsement (P) will start at $17.99 hourly. CDL status must be submitted at the time of filing the Employment Application.
Incumbents in this position organize and conduct recreation and athletic activities at a municipal recreation center, playground or community school. Duties include planning, organizing, and performing activities such as coaching soccer, volleyball, tee ball, cheerleading, basketball and other sports and physical games; arts and crafts activities and chaperoning field trips. Some positions may require being available to work evenings, nights, and/or weekends.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :- Assists a Recreation Leader in the operation of a program of athletic activities. Instructs children and adults in the rules and methods of playing various games and in the use of recreation apparatus.
- Organizes and conducts games, contests and/or activities.
- Teaches handicrafts. Tells stories to children.
- Assists in the preparation of special events and tournaments; sets up/distributes equipment.
- Assists children with schoolwork.
- Keeps simple records of activities and participants.
- Data Utilization:
Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan. - Human Interaction:
Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as program participants, co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations. - Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
Requires the ability to use sports equipment and/or materials used in performing essential functions. - Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, facility rules, accident reports, incident reports, attendance records, registration lists and forms, and general operating manuals. - Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform and explain basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. - Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written and oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment. - Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable. - Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, potential violence, disease or pathogenic substances. - Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to fifty (50) pounds. Requires the ability to run, stoop, kneel, climb and swim to demonstrate, coach or officiate athletics. - Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with monitoring children’s behavior and coaching/officiating athletics or recreational activities.
Experience participating in coaching or officiating sports activities.
