Director of Accounting (Non-Profit Association)

A leading non‑profit association is seeking a Director of Accounting to evaluate and enhance its accounting operations. The Director of Accounting will assess current processes, employee skill sets, and financial systems to provide strategic recommendations for improved efficiency, automation, and best practices.
Job Responsibilities- Conduct a comprehensive review of accounting policies, procedures, and workflows.
- Evaluate internal controls and compliance with financial reporting standards.
- Identify areas of inefficiency, redundancy, and risk within financial operations.
- Assess the capabilities and roles of current accounting staff.
- Identify skill gaps and training needs to optimize team performance.
- Recommend organizational structure improvements for accounting functions.
- Develop a roadmap for process enhancements, including workflow optimization and automation opportunities.
- Assess the current accounting system and recommend upgrades, new tools, or ERP solutions.
- Suggest and help implement best practices for reporting, reconciliations, and financial close.
- Provide a detailed action plan for financial process transformation.
- Recommend automation solutions to streamline financial reporting and transaction processing.
- Offer guidance on change management strategies to ensure a smooth transition to new systems and procedures.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with director‑level leadership in finance/accounting.
- Extensive non‑profit finance experience, including grant management, fund accounting, and compliance.
- Proven ability to evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and internal controls.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP for non‑profits, financial reporting, and ERP/accounting systems.
- Experience in change management, staff training, and process automation.
- Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Hands‑on experience with non‑profit accounting software (e.g., Navision, Great Plains, Net Suite, Sage Intacct, Quick Books Non‑Profit, or Blackbaud Financial Edge).
- Prior experience leading finance transformation projects.
- CPA, CMA, or other relevant certification preferred.
- This is a high‑impact role for a strategic, hands‑on accounting leader who can drive efficiency, system improvements, and process enhancements within a mission‑driven non‑profit organization.
