The Department of Neurology is seeking an experienced Research Coordinator to assist with clinical trial research studies in the ALS Research Program under the direction of David Walk, MD. The candidate will consent and enroll participants, and complete study visits both in-person and remotely. This role will primarily assist with clinical studies for investigational products (e.g. clinical trials) for people living with ALS and minimally assist with a biorepository collection studies for people living with ALS.
Other studies may be added to this role's portfolio based on interests of the preferred candidate.
An ideal candidate will have experience conducting clinical and/or behavioral research studies in Psychology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience, biospecimen, or a related field in college and also post-college. The ALS Research Program values professional development and is excited to support the chosen candidate as they advance their research career.
Duties/Responsibilities- 60% - Research Study Visits:
Manage study visit logistics, including identifying potential participants, recruiting, screening, consenting participants, scheduling research space, managing order sets, and conducting the participant visits. - Work with PI and research coordinator manager to determine participant eligibility.
- Perform protocol procedures with participants, including specimen collection / processing (training will be provided).
- Enter data from research visits as well as screening and enrollment data.
- Work with clinics and labs external to the University to screen patients referred to the UMN studies.
- Ensure a safe physical environment for research participation.
- Coordinate with and support other Research Coordinators in the ALS Research Program.
- Some limited travel to Minnesota locations outside of the Twin Cities may be required.
- 30% - Research Study Coordination:
Identify study-visit related needs and report them to the ALS Research Program Manager or Research Coordinator Manager. - Maintain accurate and complete study records from participant visits.
- Coordinate with monitor personnel and sponsors for research site audits.
- Provide enrollment updates for the research study.
- 10% - Administrative Duties:
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to the ALS Research Program. - Use project management software that is in place for the ALS Research Program to track study-related tasks.
- Attend ALS Program meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree in a health-related field (Pre-Med, Psychology, Neuroscience, etc.) plus at least two (2) years of post-undergraduate research assistant work experience or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least six years with at least 2 years of research assistant work experience.
- Experience with recruiting study participants and conducting research participant visits.
- Trusted collaborator and team player.
- Experience problem solving and prioritizing essential clinical research components of a research participant visit.
- Organized with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with compliance and regulatory research processes within the context of participant-facing research visits (e.g. consenting participants for research, HIPAA form completion).
- Experience processing and shipping biological specimens.
- Enthusiasm for medical/clinical research studies.
- Previous work in clinical research.
- Openness to working on site (Minneapolis Campus) at least 2-3 days per week.
- Certified clinical research professional (e.g., SoCRA or ACRP). We would also support a research professional who wishes to get their SoCRA or ACRP certification.
