Summary

Under the direction of the Risk Adjustment and Coding Manager with minimal supervision, the Coding Educator is responsible for developing and delivering coding education materials related to provider coding guidelines, coding updates, software updates, coding and billing compliance, and regulatory updates. The educator creates and delivers education to providers, the coding team, auditors, and other licensed providers to improve documentation quality and ensure accurate representation of care provided.

The educator provides applicable billing/coding and reimbursement guidelines, including federal and state laws and regulatory requirements that affect daily business operations for JHM entities. This information is researched and delivered to providers, coders, auditors, and staff through face‑to‑face or virtual communication, regular network publications, electronic and voice communications.

The position requires close collaboration with providers, practice staff, and revenue cycle team members. Extensive knowledge of government regulations and applicable reimbursement laws and regulations is required.

Highly collaborative with coding, compliance, practice staff, practice leadership, regional/sectional leadership, and production unit managers to identify coding and billing needs and facilitate change within the organization. Responsible for training and education to support professional medical services documentation and coding. Works with compliance staff to assure program adherence to internal and external regulatory standards. Collaborates with JHM/OJHP education, HIM, compliance leaders, and other Johns Hopkins entities to meet organizational training needs.

Assists with new provider onboarding regarding medical coding and billing.

Builds and maintains strong collaborative relationships with colleagues in other groups to coordinate coding education activities. Effectively communicates relevant information to assigned teams, customers, committees, and colleagues.

Education

Associate’s degree in healthcare or business‑related fields or equivalent work experience, with at least two years of Medical Coding Instructor experience, is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Required Licensure, Certification, On‑Going Training
  • CPC (Certified Professional Coder) from AAPC or CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) from AHIMA required.
  • Certified Risk Adjustment Certification (CRC) strongly preferred in addition to core certifications.
Work Experience
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in professional fee medical coding, auditing, billing, and medical documentation. Specialty experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of instructional/educational experience, training provider small and large groups.
  • Past auditing experience and strong education/training background in coding, reimbursement, and provider education required.
Salary Range

Minimum $28.47/hour – Maximum $47.00/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility. In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
