Director of Nursing, Nurse Educator
Position Summary
The ADON & Staff Development Coordinator supports the Director of Nursing in the overall management, supervision, and quality of nursing care while overseeing staff education, competency, orientation, and ongoing professional development. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations while promoting clinical excellence, staff retention, and continuous quality improvement in a long-term care environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) ResponsibilitiesAssist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, directing, and evaluating nursing services.
Provide clinical leadership and supervision to nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs).
Ensure compliance with CMS, state regulations, facility policies, and standards of care.
Participate in survey readiness, mock surveys, and plan of correction development.
Monitor resident care, documentation, and care plans to ensure quality outcomes.
Assist with staffing, scheduling, and daily clinical operations.
Address resident, family, and staff concerns professionally and promptly.
Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
Act as DON designee in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
Develop, implement, and coordinate orientation programs for all new nursing staff.
Plan and conduct ongoing education, in-services, and mandatory annual training.
Ensure competency validation for all licensed and unlicensed nursing staff.
Maintain accurate education, training, and competency records.
Educate staff on new policies, procedures, equipment, and regulatory changes.
Collaborate with leadership to identify learning needs based on audits, incidents, and survey outcomes.
Support infection control education and clinical best practices.
Promote professional growth, leadership development, and staff engagement.
Ensure compliance with CMS, OSHA, CDC, and state long-term care regulations.
Support survey preparation, response, and follow-up education.
Maintain documentation required for audits and inspections.
Ensure staff are trained and competent in resident rights, abuse prevention, infection control, and emergency procedures.
Current, unencumbered RN license (required)
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN preferred)
Minimum of 2–3 years nursing leadership experience in long-term care
Experience in staff education, training, or staff development preferred
Knowledge of CMS regulations and survey process
Strong clinical knowledge in geriatric and long-term care nursing
Excellent leadership, communication, and teaching skills
Ability to mentor, coach, and motivate staff
Strong organizational and documentation skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Proficiency with electronic health records and learning management systems
