General Purpose of Position

Installs new electrical lines and maintains existing electrical power for the City of Saint Robert.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans for maintenance/repair of existing system and for new construction - Determines and collects needed materials for work orders - Documents work completed and files completed work orders - Assists in system planning
  • Operates heavy equipment - Uses jackhammers, digger and bucket truck as needed - Is on call for twenty-four hours a day for a seven-day period for the Electric Department - Documents work completed and files completed work orders - Determines proper amperage, size, etc. for meters or transformers - Performs inspections on all new installation - Assists other Public Work departments when required
  • Conducts substation oversight - Checks controller - Performs monthly readings - Tests meters and transformers - Records proper data - Performs load switching - Performs repairs, testing, and cleaning on hydraulic and hotline equipment
  • Maintains inventory - Cleans work trucks and stocks with needed tools and supplies - Inventories equipment and supplies - Orders needed materials - Assists with bidding and budget suggestions - Maintains system drawings - Maintains Component Ops Manuals
  • System Planning - Inspects all work to make sure it is done according to specifications and regulations - Determines needed materials - Attends construction meetings when necessary - Works with outside firms - Deals with public concerns and requests - Performs inspections
  • Operates Equipment - Uses basic hand tools - Utilizes Volt and Amp meters to troubleshoot - Operates jackhammer and dump truck for cutting roads and clearing rock out of ditches

Job Context

The Journeyman is a full-time, permanent position in the Electric Department. The immediate supervisor for this position is the Journeyman Lineman Supervisor. The person in this position is supervised on a daily basis. The person in this position works regular hours, year-round. The person in this position works overtime at least 2 to 3 times a month, on call for emergencies or severe weather.

The person in this position rarely works nights except during emergencies. There is no shift work associated with this position. 5% of the work for this position is done indoors; 95% is outdoors and requires work done in all types of weather conditions.

There is at least weekly exposure to chemicals and/or hazardous materials in this position including but not limited to, PCBs cleansers, exhaust fumes, and electrical current. The stress level associated with this position is moderately low to moderately high, depending upon the workload and various deadlines. Physical work consists of, but is not limited to, standing for long periods of time, lifting, bending, and stretching.

Licenses

and Certifications
  • Valid Missouri commercial driver’s license and journeyman electrician certification.
Education and Experience
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Vocational training in electric systems is recommended.
  • Journeyman license is required.
  • Four years of experience in electrical construction distribution is required (preferred).
