Introduction to AVID Tutorials

AVID Tutors are key to the success of the AVID program. Tutors use specific teaching methodologies and work with AVID students in study groups and individually to progress toward college and career readiness.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct in-person tutorial sessions that emphasize collaborative learning and peer teaching through discussion of class and text notes.
  • Determine concepts to focus on based on student worksheets, notes, and discussions.
  • Encourage students to take responsibility for their own learning while guiding them with independence-building strategies.
  • Assist students in any subject area, using textbooks and AVID classroom resources.
  • Provide constructive feedback online and/or in-person on student work.
  • Support AVID scholars through care and connection; maintain a positive classroom tone and atmosphere.
  • Assist the AVID coordinator as needed (e.g., communication with teachers, field trips, parent contact).
  • Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students.
Qualifications
  • Excellent role models who are motivated, organized, and supportive of secondary students; capable of understanding the students’ position and advocating for their success.
