The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Enforcement team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Enforcement Division provides law enforcement services to a diverse population throughout Marion County, spanning nearly 1,200 square miles. Deputies work in a wide array of environments including urban and rural communities as well as the farming and frontier regions of Marion County depending upon their assignment.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, be service-oriented, and be willing to work in a team environment. We are a qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

WAGES

$31.40 - $37.87 Trainee Pay Rate*
$34.48 - $46.16 Certified Pay Rate

* Hourly rate negotiable.

Deputy Sheriff Trainee – New hires without DPSST police certification:
Step 3 – $31.40 hourly, $5,442.67 monthly, $65,312 annually.

Deputy Sheriff – Current DPSST police certification
:

  • Step 1 – $34.48 hourly, $5,976.53 monthly, $71,718.40 annually.
  • Step 2 – $36.04 hourly, $6,246.93 monthly, $74,963.20 annually.
  • Step 3 – $37.91 hourly, $6,571.07 monthly, $78,852.80 annually.
  • Step 4 – $39.76 hourly, $6,891.73 monthly, $82,700.80 annually.
  • Step 5 – $41.81 hourly, $7,247.07 monthly, $86,964.80 annually.
  • Step 6 – $43.86 hourly, $7,602.40 monthly, $91,228.80 annually.
  • Step 7 – $46.16 hourly, $8,001.07 monthly, $96,012.80 annually.
  • Longevity 1 (L1) – $48.47 hourly, $8,401.47 monthly, $ annually. Eligible for L1 after 10 years of Marion County service and at least 1 year on pay scale step 7.
  • Longevity 2 (L2) – $50.89 hourly, $8,820.93 monthly, $ annually. Eligible for L2 after 15 years of Marion County service and at least 1 year on Longevity 1.
  • Longevity 3 (L3) – $52.05 hourly, $9,022.00 monthly, $ annually. Eligible for L3 after 20 years of Marion County service and at least 1 year on Longevity 2.

This position is represented by the Marion County Law Enforcement Association (MCLEA).

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Patrols roads, highways, forestland, and business areas in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; patrols rivers and lakes in a patrol boat enforcing water safety laws and regulations.
  • Conducts criminal and traffic investigations and interviews; gathers evidence and takes statements of involved parties.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records necessary for efficient investigations, crime prevention, prosecution, and office procedures. Collects and secures evidence.
  • Operates radar equipment in the enforcement of speed regulations.
  • Makes arrests, books prisoners, transports prisoners under custody to institutions, courts, and on extradition.
  • Serves subpoenas, warrants of arrest, and civil papers.
  • Promotes public relations in a highly visible role by participating in community events/public forums, informing the public on public safety concerns, and answering inquiries regarding laws and ordinances.
  • Receives complaints from the community, self-dispatches mobile units, and answers general inquiries of the public.
  • Participates in search and rescue operations.
