The Manual Arts Instructor provides vocational support to patients in the forensics programs at the Oregon State Hospital to ensure a range of services are available to address vocational needs. Services include work readiness skills, pre-vocational activities, sheltered work opportunities, work hardening, job search assistance and work support activities leading to competitive employment. This position provides vocational training and manages production in the landscaping, assembly production, greenhouse supervision of Work Adjustment Skills and support for various educational activities throughout the Vocational and Educational Services Department.

The Vocational and Educational Services Department (VESD) provides a comprehensive range of vocational services to the inpatient and residential population of the Oregon State Hospital. Services include: evaluating vocational needs of individuals based on vocational history, skills, interests, goals, discharge setting, supports, and functional and cognitive status; placing individuals in appropriate vocational settings to facilitate development of a worker role and related work skills;

referring individuals to Vocational Rehabilitation Division (VRD) services, as appropriate, including collaborating with VRD counselors and administrators; and transitioning individuals to vocational settings at discharge.

What We Are Looking For

Minimum Qualifications: Six months experience in each of at least three of the following:

  • Applying the theories, methods, practices, and markets common to a production environment (essential elements for understanding consumer behavior, developing effective marketing strategies, and understanding the job market).
  • Applying work adjustment training techniques (techniques focused on developing the necessary skills and behaviors to succeed in the workplace).
  • Applying instruction principles and procedures (specific actions, strategies, and methods used to deliver a lesson and facilitate learning).
  • Using tools and equipment common to a production environment.
  • Directing individuals and groups in a work setting.
  • Communicating, both verbally and in writing, with a variety of people.

Desired Attributes: Experience working in an environment that oversees workplace tasks of individuals with mental health conditions. Experience observing and assessing patients’ work performance and providing immediate feedback for performance improvement. Experience providing workplace training, demonstrations, and instructions which includes inventory, purchasing, ordering, stocking and quality control. Passion for and experience helping persons with severe mental health challenges. Patience and skill at encouraging patients in a mental health environment as they work.

Experience verbally de-escalating situations when patients become frustrated. Must possess a high level of situational awareness to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of patients, staff, and visitors.

Preference Statement: Preference will be given to applicants who have experience working with adults with mental health conditions.
