Position: Bilingual Legal Assistant 2 - District Attorney's Office

Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available.

Mission of the District Attorney's Office

The mission of the District Attorney's Office is to seek justice through:

  • Promoting accountability for criminal offenders.
  • Interpreting, enforcing and executing law.
  • Responding to the concerns of victims and the public; and
  • Working cooperatively with members of the justice system.
General Statement of Duties

Independently performs legal support activities of a complex clerical nature, which require specialized training and skills.

Supervision Received

Works under the supervision of a Legal Assistant Supervisor who assigns work, establishes goals, and reviews results obtained for compliance with department policies, procedures and goals.

Supervision of employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.

Typical Duties

This position provides services to monolingual Spanish‑speaking clients; therefore, fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are required.

  • Issue wage withholding orders. Contact employers to verify employment and explain laws and office policy concerning wage assignment.
  • Process license suspensions, compliance agreements and reinstatements.
  • Process remedial and punitive show‑cause contempt for service.
  • Complete motions, affidavits and orders for legal actions.
  • Complete court‑order transfers to Marion County from other counties.
  • Explain health‑care coverage rules to parties and employers.
  • Explain law and policies to customers and employers.
  • Update cases with new court orders in the Origin system.
  • Weekly contempt docket preparation and update cases after court.
  • Maintain contempt docket calendar.
  • Rotation with other Legal Secretary 2s to maintain front‑desk coverage.
  • Attorney assignments and requests.
  • Pull files for attorney enforcement review.
  • Complete Origin tasks or transfer to appropriate worker.
  • Update case based on new information received.
  • Send appropriate paperwork as needed to parties and representatives.
  • Assist reception during breaks and absences to maintain adequate staffing.
  • Prepare miscellaneous motions, orders and other legal documents.
  • Archive closed files.
  • Process customer payments.
  • E‑file documents to court.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Requirements for the Position Experience and Training
  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND
  • Three years of experience in office and secretarial work, one year of which must be equivalent to the level of Legal Secretary 1, in a public or private law office; OR
  • Any satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position, as determined by Marion County.
  • Preferences
    • Supplemental secretarial training is preferred.
    Special Requirements
    • Fluent bilingual Spanish/English skills are required. An additional 5% will be added to the hourly wage as compensation for this skill. Finalist will be required to pass a verbal and written standardized Spanish/English fluency assessment as part of the hiring process.
    • A criminal history background check, including fingerprinting, is required; conviction of a crime may not necessarily disqualify an individual for this position.
    • Must possess, or obtain within 30 days of hire, Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification.
    • Safe‑sensitive/special‑needs position. Final candidates will be required to pass a pre‑employment drug screen, including testing for marijuana. The Marion County drug and alcohol use and testing policy can be found at
    • Notary certification (obtain and maintain qualification throughout employment).
    • This is a full‑time position, which is eligible for overtime.
    • This position is represented by a union.
    • Work schedule:

      Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with flexibility depending upon the needs of the department.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    Considerable knowledge of accepted modern office practices, procedures and techniques;
    English composition, spelling, and grammar; arithmetic; concepts of prioritizing/organizing work; modern office equipment and machinery and their intended use; a variety of computer systems and software.
