Job Description

Our Mission – To protect and promote resilient forests that benefit all Oregonians. The position may be stationed in Sisters or at guard stations in La Pine or Lake Chinook. If you are interested in a wildfire career with the Oregon Department of Forestry, this is the place to challenge yourself and serve our communities. Wildland firefighters may be required to work long hours in challenging and changing conditions, such as high temperatures and steep terrain.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) seasons of Wildland firefighting experience.
  • Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
  • Successful applicants must pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level if selected.
  • If you do not have 2 seasons of experience, you may still apply as an underfill candidate.
General Duties
  • Locate fires using maps, GPS, and compass and conduct wildland firefighting activities.
  • Construct fire lines using hand tools or power equipment, including cutting, scraping, digging, chopping or burning out flammable materials.
  • Operate various types of fire equipment.
Skills We Are Looking For
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform under high stress, fast‑paced emergency situations.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools and motorized equipment commonly used for wildland fire.
Working Conditions

This position supports wildfire operations in a variety of environments and may involve extended or irregular hours during peak activity. Work can include periods of physical exertion in heat, smoke, and rugged terrain. Travel is required, and employees may be assigned to 14‑day deployments, during which they must be prepared and self‑sufficient. Some assignments occur in remote or rural areas where cell service, facilities, and other resources may be limited.
