Deputy Sheriff – Institutions Team
Marion County requires on‑site work; remote work is not available.
Job OverviewDeputy Sheriffs in the Institutions division provide 24‑hour supervision, monitor all adults in custody, and facilitate programs and services for pre‑trial and sentenced adults.
Compensation- Trainee Pay Rate
: $31.40 – $37.87 per hour - Certified Pay Rate
: $34.48 – $46.16 per hour - Hourly rate negotiable
Pay incentives may include:
- Certification 8% (4% intermediate, 4% advanced)
- Bilingual 5%
- Field Training Officer 5%
- Instructor 5%
- Cell Extraction 5%
- SWAT Team 5%
- Longevity Pay (Eligible for Longevity 1 after 10 years of service and at least 1 year on pay scale step 7; Longevity 2 after 15 years; Longevity 3 after 20 years)

- Maintain security, sanitation, health, and medical standards by supervising adults in custody.
- Ensure due process rights of adults in custody in disciplinary matters.
- Ensure access to materials, services, and privileges in accordance with the law.
- Adhere to and enforce job‑related rules, policies, and procedures.
- Attend and participate in unit briefings, meetings, and training.
- Maintain neat, accurate, and complete reports, memos, disciplinary reports, and unit rosters.
- Work a 24‑hour, 7‑day week; may require day, swing, night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
- Remain constantly alert and observant throughout the shift.
- Control access to and egress from the facility.
- Conduct visual and tactile searches of adults in custody.
- Conduct area searches to detect contraband and security deficiencies.
- Transport and escort adults in custody inside and outside the facility.
- Respond to and assist in emergency situations.
- Use approved restraints and firearms as required.
- Operate firefighting and surveillance equipment.
- Monitor and control radio, telephone, and alarm systems.
- Coordinate with the incident commander during emergencies.
- Provide verbal instructions over the intercom.
- U.S. Citizen within one year of employment.
- At least 21 years of age at the time of employment (age 20 considered if in a 90‑day age‑in‑transition window).
- Physically able to perform required duties.
- Good moral fitness with no legal conduct involving moral turpitude, fraud, misrepresentation, or conviction of drug/sex crimes.
- Compliance with Oregon law enforcement qualifications.
- Valid Oregon driver’s license (obtain within 30 days of hire).
- Extensive background investigation.
- Pass psychological and physical exam.
- Firearm proficiency meeting department minimums.
- Complete Field Training and Evaluation Program within first year.
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen (including marijuana).
- Work rotating, split, or other alternative schedules.
- Meet trainee level requirements and have 18 months of experience as a corrections officer or deputy, or a satisfactory combination of work, education, and training.
- Possess Basic Corrections Officer certification from DPSST. Out‑of‑state certification requires completion of the DPSST Career Officer Development Course within one year of hire.
- Complete one of the following academic proficiencies:
- Recent REACT test with National Testing Network.
- Four‑year post‑secondary degree from an accredited institution recognized by the Oregon Office of Degree Authorization.
- Basic Corrections certification from DPSST.
- Complete the NEOGOV application.
