Overview
Correctional Officer — Oregon State Correctional Institution (Salem). Relocation Assistance Available. This entry-level position is with the Oregon Department of Corrections (ODOC).
Responsibilities- Work in a team setting to maintain order within the institution, enforce rules and regulations, and provide care to ensure safety and security for adults in custody.
- Conduct cell checks and searches for contraband, settle disputes, and enforce discipline.
- Monitor activities, supervise work assignments, observe safety and sanitation, report hazards, and participate in on-the-job training during the Basic Corrections Course (BCC).
- Support training and education efforts; assist in facilitating positive changes in the lives of adults in custody.
- High school diploma or GED
- Age 21 or older
- United States citizen
- Meet DPSST physical standards
- Reading comprehension, report writing, and retention abilities
- Pass background investigations and related assessments per agency requirements
- Pass NTN test with a minimum score of 70% in all areas
- Good employee work history
- History of law-abiding behavior
- Pass psychological evaluation and risk assessment as required
- No evidence of substance abuse
- Proficient using computers
- Valid driver’s license
The position includes a probationary first year with formal training (BCC) certified by the Department of Public Safety and Standards Training (DPSST). Training is on-the-job; compensation begins during training. The probationary period may include varying work hours based on institutional needs. All Correctional Officer positions are union represented and subject to labor contracts and bid processes after probation.
Requirements and Background- CJIS fingerprint-based background check and CJIS eligibility required; certain felonies may disqualify applicants
- Background investigation and criminal history checks (LEDS, NCIC, DMV, etc.)
- Electronic Statement of Personal History (eSOPH) with 10-year history submission; 12 topics
- Pre-employment medical and psychological evaluation if selected
- Completion of background checks and references as part of the process
- Salary range: $5,729 – $7,785 (base) for non-PERS applicants; adjustments may apply for PERS-eligible candidates
