Position: Child Protective Services Worker (SSS1), Bilingual English & Spanish Required

Overview

Child Protective Services Worker (SSS1), Bilingual English & Spanish Required – A role with the Oregon Department of Human Services focused on protecting children and supporting families through trauma‑informed, antiracist practices.

Salary and Pay

Base pay range:
USD 4,833.00 – 7,407.00 per month.
Employee status. The position may include a 5% differential for passing required bilingual testing.

Responsibilities
  • Protect children’s safety and support families by engaging with parents and caregivers using trauma‑informed, antiracist approaches.
  • Navigate the needs of the child and family while balancing legal requirements.
  • Conduct assessments and fact‑finding interviews related to child safety, risk of abuse, neglect, or harm.
  • Analyze information to determine appropriate child placement, considering each family’s unique circumstances.
  • Create reports, case notes, testify in court, and communicate with diverse populations in office, community, or legal settings.
  • Adhere to ORS 419B.021 educational requirements for child protective investigations and custody determinations.
Qualifications
  • A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (confirmation via language proficiency testing).
  • Associate degree with either:
    • Two years of human services–related experience; or
    • One year of human services experience plus related training, coursework, or certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.
  • Bachelor’s degree in human services or related field; or
  • Bachelor’s degree unrelated to human services with:
    • One year of human services experience or
    • Completion of coursework equivalent to certification consistent with Oregon Caseworker Competency.
  • Degree must be completed; experience alone does not meet the minimum qualifications.
Essential Attributes
  • Experience engaging trauma‑impacted families from diverse backgrounds in person‑centered assessments in both English and Spanish.
  • Experience working with community partners and organizations to support diverse families.
  • Capacity to contribute to psychological safety, well‑being, and belonging in a team environment.
  • Experience managing dynamic workflow in a high‑volume setting.
Working Conditions
  • Work conducted in offices, participants’ homes, and community sites.
  • Occasional travel for meetings, trainings, and case activities.
  • Professional work week with fluctuating hours; occasional compensated overtime including evenings and weekends.
  • Rotating on‑call schedule with evenings and weekends.
  • Exposure to sensitive trauma, abuse, substance use, and crisis situations; requires a trauma‑informed approach.
Background Checks and Requirements
  • Criminal history and background check required for finalists; adverse history may lead to disqualification.
  • No visa sponsorship. US Department of Homeland Security I‑9 and E‑Verify required within three days of hire.
  • Finalists must be cleared by the FBI CJIS through a fingerprint‑based criminal records check.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record remain mandatory.
