Construction Inspector

Job Location: VDOT Salem District Office - Salem, VA 24153

Perform field inspections of construction and maintenance projects and document test results on soils, asphalt, concrete and other materials. Work under the supervision of a Project Engineer, traveling throughout the state as needed, and may be required to work night shifts. Must hold a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Essential Functions
  • Perform field inspections of construction and maintenance projects and of existing roadways, structures and facilities.
  • Conduct and document tests on soils, asphalt, concrete, aggregates, bituminous products, metal products and industrial coatings.
  • Respond to data requests.
  • Participate in traffic control activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Certifications
  • Soil and Aggregate Compaction
  • Asphalt Field Level I & II
  • Hydraulic Cement Concrete Field
  • Pavement Marking
  • Slurry Surfacing
  • Flagger Certification
  • Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection
  • Stormwater Management (Inspector) Certification
  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control
  • GRIT (Guardrail Certification)
  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Training
  • 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training
Additional Responsibilities
  • Fill out the Inspector's Daily Report (IDR) documenting labor, equipment, and material.
  • Maintain daily progress photos.
  • Fill out Force Account records for unresolved change orders.
  • Maintain a Sketchbook containing construction documentation.
  • Participate in reconciliation of pay quantities on progress payments.
  • Attend meetings as needed.
  • Participate in change order negotiations and CPM schedule meetings when appropriate.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Commitment to a drug‑free workplace.
