The Learning Management System (LMS) Manager is responsible for the administration, configuration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the University’s Canvas LMS environment. This role serves as the primary system owner for Canvas, ensuring platform stability, security, integrations, and alignment with academic, compliance, and operational requirements.
The LMS Manager works closely with IT leadership, academic leadership, faculty, instructional designers, and third-party vendors to support teaching and learning while ensuring system reliability, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
Core Responsibilities- Serve as the primary administrator and subject-matter expert for the Canvas LMS.
- Configure and maintain courses, user roles, permissions, term structures, and sub-accounts.
- Manage system updates, feature releases, and configuration changes in coordination with IT leadership.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and resolve LMS-related incidents in a timely manner.
- Maintain LMS documentation, standards, and operating procedures.
- Oversee LMS integrations with SIS, CRM, authentication systems (SSO), proctoring tools, video platforms, and third-party learning tools.
- Coordinate with IT teams and vendors on API integrations, upgrades, and data synchronization.
- Ensure proper data flow, security, and access controls across integrated systems.
- Serve as an escalation point for LMS issues impacting faculty, staff, and students.
- Provide guidance, training, and best practices for Canvas usage in collaboration with academic leadership.
- Support onboarding of new faculty and staff related to LMS access and usage.
- Ensure LMS configurations align with institutional policies, accreditation standards, FERPA, and data security requirements.
- Support audit requests, accreditation reviews, and regulatory reporting related to instructional delivery and system usage.
- Implement quality assurance checks for course shells, term rollovers, and system settings.
- Generate and analyze LMS usage reports to support academic operations, compliance, and decision-making.
- Support leadership requests for data related to course engagement, access, and system utilization.
- Work closely with:
- Director of IT and IT staff
- Academic leadership and program directors
- Instructional design and faculty development teams
- Student services and compliance staff
- Participate in planning and execution of LMS-related initiatives and technology improvements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Educational Technology, Instructional Design, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 3+ years of hands‑on experience administering Canvas LMS in a higher education or institutional environment.
- Strong understanding of LMS architecture, user roles, permissions, and course lifecycle management.
- Experience with system integrations (SIS, SSO, LTI tools).
- Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating across departments.
- Experience in higher education, online education, or regulated academic environments.
- Familiarity with accreditation requirements and compliance considerations.
- Experience supporting faculty and instructional staff.
- Knowledge of FERPA and higher‑ed data security best practices.
- Experience with reporting tools and LMS analytics.
