Assistant County Engineer – Saline County, Kansas
Job Duties- Perform professional engineering duties in the planning, designing, drafting and inspection of departmental projects.
- Assist the County Engineer, supervising and aiding in the design and plan preparation of bridge, culvert, grading and paving projects.
- Review, prepare and acquire all regulatory permits and approvals required for projects.
- Prepare bid documents for purchase of department road and bridge materials.
- Oversee inspection and payments of construction projects in progress.
- Supervise and assist surveying crews.
- Prepare cost estimates on planned projects for bid letting.
- Perform and coordinate bridge safety inspections and submittals to the Kansas Department of Transportation.
- Contact landowners and arrange purchase of right‑of‑way for field projects.
- Evaluate and design traffic signage and pavement markings.
- Assist the County Engineer in the preparation of budgets and annual reports.
- Attend meetings, conferences, and professional development programs related to engineering.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary or required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license and be insurable under Saline County's fleet insurance policy.
- Professional Engineer licensed by the State of Kansas or obtain a Kansas license within the first 12 months of employment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field (three years of experience as a Civil Engineer preferred).
- Strong people‑management and communication skills.
- Good planning skills.
- Knowledge of road and bridge construction and maintenance methods and techniques.
- Work Level: Level 3 Medium Work. Exerting 20‑50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10‑25 pounds frequently, and greater than negligible force up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Communicate ideas by spoken word, give assignments or directions.
- Eye‑hand‑foot coordination sufficient to drive a vehicle.
- Ability to pick, pinch, or work primarily with fingers.
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and similar structures using feet, legs, hands, and arms.
- Maintain body balance to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces.
