Job Classification: PARK & FACILITY MAINTENANCE I (16 years of age or older)

This classification is the entry level of the recreation series working under immediate supervision.

Duties
  • Assists with summer nature programs & special environmental events.
  • Performs manual labor in the maintenance of Lakewood Discovery Center structures & grounds.
  • Maintains trails including grounds maintenance.
  • Plants & maintains learning gardens & prairie areas including seeding, watering, aerification, top dressing, planting flowers, weed removal, painting, fence repair, dirt work & related duties.
  • Performs improvements to wildlife/fisheries habitats.
  • Conducts wildlife surveys.
  • Stocks fish.
  • Provides custodial services including cleaning restrooms & trash removal.
  • Administers basic first aid, if needed.
  • Responds in emergency situations within scope of training.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Education
  • Eighth grade graduate.
  • CPR & First Aid certifications desired.
Experience
  • Work experience in general manual labor or landscape maintenance or related work.
  • Ability to perform work using hand held non‑powered tools utilized in landscape maintenance & repair work.
Hand Tools
  • Hammers, wrenches, screw drivers, shovels, clippers, rakes & non‑powered hand held edgers, as assigned.

  • Must be able to follow instructions.
  • Must be a self‑starter & be able to work productively.
  • Must have excellent problem‑solving skills & demonstrate good judgement when completing job duties.
  • Maintains a high standard of customer service.
  • Maintains positive & cooperative working relationships.
  • Works indoors/outdoors in changing environmental conditions; must be able to work in temperatures which often exceeds 90 degrees.
  • Communicates well with patrons of various ages from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates kindness to patrons & presents professional attitude at all times.
  • Must be able to communicate verbally & in writing.
Requirements
  • Sixteen (16) year olds will work in a non‑driving capacity.
  • Seventeen (17) year olds must possess a valid driver's license to operate utility vehicles & golf carts on city property & non‑public access passageways.
  • Performs all job tasks according to rules & guidelines of Salina Parks & Recreation's safety program & weather alert procedures.
  • Must have reliable transportation to‑and‑from work.
  • Must be available to work shifts.
  • Must attend required trainings & meetings.
  • Required to review posted event calendars.
  • Must follow scheduling protocols & be able to obtain weekly work schedule.
  • Must follow time & attendance guidelines must adhere to payroll requirements.
  • Must respond in a timely manner to all forms of communication regarding City of Salina employment by way of phone calls, emails, texts, etc.
  • Must be able to lift 10‑40 pounds frequently.

Job Classification: PARK & FACILITY MAINTENANCE II (18 years of age or older)

This classification is mid‑level of the park & facility maintenance series working under general supervision.

Duties
  • Leads summer nature programs & special environmental events.
  • Supervises the Park & Facility Maintenance I staff in the absence of the Recreation Supervisor.
  • Responsible to fulfill the duties of the Park & Facility Maintenance I staff, as needed.
  • Performs manual labor in the maintenance of Lakewood Discovery Center structures & grounds.
  • Maintains trails including grounds maintenance.
  • Plants & maintains learning gardens & prairie areas including seeding, planting, watering, trimming, aerification, top dressing, planting flowers, weed removal, painting, dirt work, lawn maintenance, mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerification, top dressing, weed & pest control, & related duties.
