Overview
The Monterey County District Attorney's Office is seeking entry-level Deputy District Attorney / Prosecutor I & II positions in the criminal division. Candidates pending California Bar results after taking the California Bar Examination are strongly encouraged to apply.
Compensation- Deputy District Attorney I: $6,902 – $9,365 Monthly
- Deputy District Attorney II: $8,257 – $11,215 Monthly
- Sign‑up bonus up to $10,000 for hires after July 01, 2024.
- Attend scheduled court hearings (arraignments, pretrial hearings, motions, sentencing, and probation revocations).
- Marshal, review, and prepare evidence for presentation in court.
- Prepare and prosecute criminal and civil cases by presenting opening statements, interrogating and cross‑examining witnesses, introducing evidence, making relevant objections, arguing points of law, and presenting closing arguments.
- Research questions of law and evidence and apply statutory and decisional case law and other legal treatises as required in the preparation of cases for hearing in court.
- Determine nature and extent of prosecutions and negotiate the appropriate disposition of criminal cases without going to trial.
- Current, valid membership in the California State Bar required by date of hire.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Understanding of the Office of the District Attorney.
- Ethical standards applicable to prosecutors and attorneys.
- Legal research, writing, and rules of evidence.
- Principles of criminal and civil law, criminal procedure, and trial practice.
- Statutory, constitutional, and decisional criminal laws of California.
- Computer proficiency and strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage a heavy caseload and work independently under general supervision.
- Experience in rotating between Salinas and Monterey courthouses.
- Independent management of a heavy caseload, often requiring extra hours.
- Rotation between Salinas and Monterey courthouses.
- Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.
- Ability to respond to law enforcement requests for assistance when on duty.
