SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Animal Services Bureau has an opening for a regular part-time (0.5 FTE) Veterinarian at the Animal Services Center in Salinas. Reporting to the Administrator of the Animal Services Bureau, the successful candidate will provide licensed veterinary services to the Animal Services Center for 20 hours each week, including spay/neuter surgeries, veterinary care for incoming stray animals, ongoing care for shelter animals, and instruction to technical support staff such as Registered Veterinary Technicians and Animal Care Technicians.

Hitchcock Road Animal Services is a Joint Power Agency between the County of Monterey and the City of Salinas. The County of Monterey acts as the lead agency, and all employees are hired by the County of Monterey. The agency's duties include field services for animal impoundment, rabies treatment and prevention, kennel and pet shop permitting, response to animal nuisance and code issues, sheltering for stray and lost animals, pet licensing, veterinary services, and community outreach programs.

As of December 29th, 2023, the Health Department offers up to a $10,000 signing bonus for candidates hired into this classification from this recruitment.

The eligible list from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies, both regular and temporary.

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE

Will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Thorough Knowledge of:
  • Current principles, practices, and policies of veterinary medicine.
  • Laws and regulations governing local shelter populations, primarily small animals.
  • Health care terminology and technology related to veterinary medicine.
  • Medications for animals and their effects.
Working Knowledge of:
  • Safety policies and procedures related to veterinary medicine.
  • Spay and neuter surgeries following established protocols.
Skill and Ability to:
  • Perform a full range of veterinarian duties.
  • Communicate clearly and follow instructions.
  • Diagnose and treat animals veterinary-wise.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with contacts.
  • Prepare clear reports.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Complete a background check, including fingerprinting.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or equivalent transportation.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergencies.
  • Hold an active veterinary license issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board.
  • Possess a DEA certificate/license.
