Overview

Loss Prevention Specialist at GOODWILL CENTRAL COAST. Maintain a proactive, integrated and dynamic asset protection, loss prevention and safety program to support Goodwill’s mission by reducing or eliminating loss or damage of assets through theft, dishonesty, or misuse and ensure a safe environment for customers and staff.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain asset protection, loss prevention and safety at Goodwill by enforcing policies and procedures, ensuring proper use of assets, and monitoring for loss vulnerabilities.
  • Identify and prevent internal and external theft.
  • Document apprehensions and recoveries.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of reported or suspected losses, including interviewing involved parties and witnesses, collecting evidence, and preparing comprehensive investigation reports; may involve legal channels to recover misappropriated assets.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local law enforcement and district attorney’s offices to assist in apprehension, prosecution or recovery of assets; testify in court or administrative hearings when required.
  • Perform regular asset protection integrity checks at all locations (retail stores, donation sites, warehouses, and other owned or controlled areas).
  • Train on and maintain proficiency in the Point-of-Sale (POS) system to monitor areas of potential theft and loss vulnerability; monitor discount program discrepancies and void logs for signs of misuse.
  • Monitor security camera systems and research/collect surveillance footage as needed to investigate asset loss or enforce safety policies.
  • Adhere to procedures for collection and disposal of firearms, fireworks, alcohol, medical waste and other dangerous materials or donations deemed too risky or illegal to resell.
  • Remove and issue No Trespass notifications to persons who commit theft or other criminal acts, pose safety hazards, or create unsafe environments.
  • Testify as a witness in court proceedings as necessary.
  • Perform periodic spot checks on purchased goods inventory at stores and warehouses; conduct periodic integrity checks on employees.
  • Report hazardous or unsafe conditions to the Senior Risk Management Director and participate in safety audits, inspections and drills to maintain a safe environment for employees and customers.
Secondary Duties
  • Assist Senior Director, Deputy Director, Supervisor and Investigators with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education Required: High School diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred, but not required.
  • License/Certification

    Required:

    Valid Class C California driver’s license.
  • Experience

    Required:

    Specialized knowledge of asset protection/loss prevention systems, procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge

    Required:

    Familiarity with Goodwill Central Coast’s mission and general policies/procedures (may be learned on-the-job); basic computer literacy; familiarity with interviewing techniques and applicable laws and penal codes (may be learned on-the-job); familiarity with POS software and equipment (may be learned on-the-job); knowledge of merchandise material handling (may be learned on-the-job).
  • Equipment Used: Office and retail equipment, vehicles, video cameras, CCTV equipment, smartphones and tablets; handcuffs and binoculars as applicable.
  • Skills/Aptitudes/Temperaments: Ability to communicate effectively in English (and basic Spanish desired); organize and manage time; understand instructions; maintain confidentiality; interact effectively with all employees and the public; perform repetitive work with consistency; drive a vehicle for company business (good driving record and insurance may be required); take responsibility for direction/completion of activities; adapt to situations and others’ viewpoints; manual dexterity for typing and computer use;

    adhere to safety practices and report hazards promptly.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • The job is primarily sedentary with walking and standing as needed; lifting up to 25 lbs occasionally; heavier items handled with assistive equipment or as directed.
  • Standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching at/above shoulder level, pushing/pulling, and occasional climbing or squatting as required.
  • Driving long and short distances as part of job duties.
