The Mental Health Therapist provides direct mental health treatment, stabilization, and recovery‑focused care for patients in a short‑term (30–60‑day) residential setting treating both substance use and co‑occurring mental health disorders. The clinician ensures coordination of care among medical, psychiatric, and counseling staff and supports the integration of mental health treatment across all levels of care.
The right candidate will also serve as a clinical mentor to Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselors (CDCs), strengthening their ability to recognize, assess, and treat co‑occurring mental health symptoms within the addiction recovery process.
Clinical Duties- Perform biopsychosocial and mental status assessments upon admission and as clinically indicated, focusing on acute stabilization needs, co‑occurring symptoms, and readiness for recovery.
- Deliver short‑term, evidence‑based interventions (CBT, DBT‑informed, trauma stabilization, motivational enhancement) appropriate to a 30–60‑day residential setting.
- Collaborate with medical, psychiatric, and substance use treatment teams to develop integrated, individualized care plans addressing detoxification, medication management, relapse prevention, and emotional regulation.
- Participate actively in daily clinical and shift‑change meetings to ensure real‑time communication about patient acuity, safety concerns, and stabilization needs.
- Provide crisis intervention and stabilization support for psychiatric or behavioral incidents, coordinating with medical and psychiatric providers as needed.
- Ensure continuity of care through all levels of treatment and assist with linking patients to appropriate outpatient, residential, or community mental health services upon discharge.
- Facilitate family sessions and provide psychoeducation to improve understanding of co‑occurring disorders, relapse warning signs, and recovery supports.
- Document all patient care, progress notes, and treatment updates in compliance with governing bodies, payer requirements, and HBH standards.
- Work collaboratively with Utilization Review and case management to provide clinical justification for continued stay and discharge planning.
- Communicate regularly with billing and accounting departments to ensure accurate documentation and billing for all services rendered.
- Serve as a liaison with external hospitals or psychiatric facilities for acute transfers and coordinate re‑entry or step‑down as appropriate.
- Provide guidance during admissions and emergencies, ensuring appropriate risk assessment and safety planning.
- Participate in program development and identify opportunities to improve integration of mental health and SUD services.
- Maintain awareness of emerging best practices in co‑occurring and trauma‑informed treatment and share relevant knowledge with staff.
- Provide clinical supervision and mentoring to any staff hired within one’s mental health field, as applicable.
- Offer guidance and training to CDCs to increase their competency in recognizing and managing co‑occurring disorders, conducting mental health‑informed assessments, and integrating MH topics into group and individual sessions.
- Conduct case consultations and mini‑trainings for staff on key co‑occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, and personality disorders.
- Maintain all documentation for supervision provided, ensuring copies are available to the supervisee and HBH.
