Position SummaryRowan-Cabarrus Community College is seeking a dedicated and student-focused High School Equivalency (HSE) and Reading Literacy Instructor to teach adult learners at Piedmont Correctional Institute. The instructor will deliver instruction in reading, writing, social studies, science, and mathematics aligned with HSE/GED standards, while creating an engaging and supportive learning environment for justice-involved students.
Required Education/Experience- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
- Strong communication and classroom management skills.
- Ability to adapt instruction for adult learners with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.
- Commitment to the mission of correctional and adult education.
- Teaching experience in Adult Basic Education (ABE), HSE/GED preparation, or correctional education.
- Experience with TABE, CASAS, or other standardized adult education assessments.
- Familiarity with technology-enhanced instruction and remote learning tools.
- Master’s degree in Education, Adult Education, or related field.
Skills and Abilities
This position is located inside a correctional facility, and instructors must be able to adapt to the unique requirements of teaching in a secure environment. Class Schedules, access and resources are subject to the institutional rules and procedures, which may differ significantly from traditional academic settings. Flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances are essential for success in this role.

- Provide instruction in HSE subject areas (math, reading, writing, science, and social studies).
- Develop and deliver lesson plans that address diverse learning needs, including English as a Second Language (ESL) students and students with varying academic backgrounds.
- Administer assessments, track student progress, and maintain accurate academic records in compliance with RCCC and correctional education policies.
- Collaborate with correctional staff and RCCC colleagues to ensure instructional continuity and student safety.
- Incorporate digital literacy and workforce readiness skills when appropriate.
- Participate in required professional development and training sessions.
- Maintain accurate and constant attendance records.
