Position Summary

The Campus Safety Coordinator position is a staff member who reports to the Director of Campus Health, Safety and Security. The primary objective of the Campus Safety Coordinator is to maintain a safe environment for everyone on campus by ensuring the physical security along with the environmental and occupational safety of all people and assets of the campus they are assigned.

The coordinator will be highly visible, interactive, and available to all persons on the assigned campus and will interact with students, visitors, and employees to answer questions, give directions, de-escalate situations involving conflict, refer students to various college resources i.e., counseling, advising etc. This is an unarmed position.

The coordinators provide support for faculty, staff, students, and visitors by enforcing college policies and procedures, ensuring safety and physical security of all operations, responding to all emergency situations to provide initial management and coordination of the emergency, using all of the emergency management infrastructure including all physical emergency equipment (automated defibrillators, fire extinguishers etc.) and all computerized systems (electronic access control, mass communication systems, reporting software etc.)

and to ensure all appropriate emergency notifications and documentation are completed.

This position will involve evening and weekend work and may be assigned or relocated during a shift to any campus at any time.

Required Education/Experience

Associates degree or above in higher education, emergency services, business, or a related field, and four (4) years’ experiences in Security, Military service, emergency services or related area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills
  • Two or more years of professional experience in emergency management, with a strong preference for experience in a higher education or campus environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of campus safety protocols, emergency operations planning, and coordination with internal departments and external agencies is highly desirable.

Skills and Abilities

Mobility requirement.

This position may at times be required to stay mobile on foot during the entire shift. When responding to emergencies, the coordinator may need to get on the floor to administer first aid or CPR and may need to lift and or drag a person to safety. This position requires occasional running, climbing, and lifting of people and equipment. The candidate must have the physical ability to perform these tasks.

Training

and Certification Requirements
  • CPR/AED and first aid.
  • RCCC Campus Safety Coordinator initial training Course (includes active threat, severe weather planning and response, incident command, radio and communications operations, emergency equipment operations, conflict de-escalation and resolution, crowd and traffic control, physical security and patrol procedures, risk assessment, Clery act and title IX).
  • NIMS 7/00 & 8/00 and IC 10/00 & 20/00.

    Duty and Responsibility
  • Coordinates day-to-day facilities, safety, and security operations; ensures compliance with applicable internal and external requirements.
  • Responds to requests for information, in person, via e-mail, and over the phone; takes and transmits messages; answers routine questions and provides information; directs visitors to appropriate locations.
  • Prepares and/or enters a variety of information into applicable documents, spreadsheets, databases, invoices, logs, forms, and/or other related areas, utilizing established guidelines and procedures.
  • Investigates accidents and injuries; maintains related data and information; prepares related reports. Conducts safety investigations for potential safety hazards.
  • Maintain familiarity with the colleges policies and procedures especially regarding emergency management and security. Maintain familiarity with the college website and SharePoint in order to be able to direct people to resources such as student services, employee incident reports etc.
