Consultant Ophthalmologist – Cornea and Anterior Segment

Location: Salisbury, UK – Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust

Contract: Permanent, Part‑time (6 PAs per week)

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per annum (pro‑rated for part‑time)

Job Summary

We are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with subspecialist interest in cornea and anterior segment to join our supportive and forward‑thinking team at Salisbury District Hospital. This substantive consultant post is designed to support and strengthen the delivery of our expanding Ophthalmology service.

Main Duties
  • Provide high‑quality care through outpatient clinics, procedures, and surgical intervention.
  • Support the adult cataract service, managing routine and complex surgical cases.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including specialist optometrists and ophthalmic technicians.
  • Implement and refine innovative pathways such as imaging clinics and telephone consultations.
  • Expand surgical and laser treatment options to deliver individualized care.
  • Participate in general ophthalmology clinics and the consultant on‑call rota (pro‑rated).
Person Specification

Education and Training

  • Essential: Possession, or within six months of possession, of a CCT in ophthalmology leading to entry onto the GMC Specialist Register;
    Full GMC registration with a licence to practice;
    Evidence of specialist expertise and fellowship level training in anterior eye / cornea.
  • Desirable: Knowledge and application of up‑to‑date evidence‑based practice.

Quality / Governance

  • Experience in managing risk and knowing when to seek help.
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance principles.
  • Ability to contribute to service development.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Evidence of wide experience and high competence in ophthalmology.
  • Ability to perform cataract surgery independently at a reasonable volume (7+).
  • Sound clinical judgement and logical thinking.
  • Desirable:
    Clinical leadership, efficient time management, teamwork and staff motivation.

Performance

  • Willingness to work within Trust and NHS performance targets.
  • Ability to balance individual and departmental needs.
