Job SummaryThe post holder will develop, implement and manage the educational service for staff within Maternity and Neonatal Services. This includes junior and senior midwifery and nursing staff, as well as medical staff and allied health professionals where appropriate. They will ensure delivery of training and education, implement national standards for midwives, and maintain evidence‑based practice.
The post holder will identify training and education needs through analysis of clinical and national recommendations, advise on required resources, and communicate effectively while exercising high levels of clinical and leadership autonomy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Matron, Consultants, and Coordinators to identify training and education requirements for all levels of staff.
- Conduct training needs analysis and develop appropriate training plans to fill skills and knowledge gaps.
- Maintain personal clinical competence and credibility by delivering maternity care.
- Ensure midwifery care meets all requirements of the Core Competency Framework, CQC, and peer review training obligations, including mandatory training and medical device training.
- Maintain skills and competencies for Registered Midwives in line with local and national requirements.
- Plan and deliver multi‑disciplinary and multi‑professional training (e.g., PROMPT, Saving Babies' Lives, and mandatory study), incorporating local and national themes to highlight areas for improvement.
- Promote and provide opportunities and resources for staff training, academic courses, and professional development.
- Act as a Practice Assessor (in line with NMC Guidance for Students) and as an appraiser/line manager to clinicians.
- Provide situational support in a clinical environment for students, apprentices, return‑to‑practice learners, and early career midwives.
Essential
- Registered Midwife with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience.
- Practice education experience – minimum of 1 year.
- Experience of facilitation/education and presenting to audiences.
- Clinical midwifery experience in all areas of practice, including care for women at high risk of complications and management of obstetric emergencies.
- Strong communication, leadership, negotiation and organisational skills.
- Working knowledge of issues currently impacting Maternity Services, including Clinical Governance and Information Governance.
- Evidence of effective and collaborative working within teams.
- Evidence of continuing personal and professional development in key areas: clinical practice, education, and health service management.
Desirable
- Postgraduate qualification in an education‑related subject or willingness to undertake further education.
