You'll help them find their place across our galleries, collections, events, activities, and you'll play a central part in making every visitor feel welcome.
Job DescriptionThe Salisbury Museum tells the story of Salisbury and the surrounding area, a landscape that has been home to continuous human achievement for over half a million years. Our galleries cover archaeology, the history of Salisbury, ceramics and natural history. Highlights include the Amesbury Archer, artefacts from Stonehenge, the Pitt-Rivers collections, works by Turner and Constable, the Rex Whistler archive and the Salisbury Giant.
We are seeking a part-time Volunteer Co-ordinator to lead our thriving and dedicated team of over 200 volunteers. This is a paid role at the heart of the museum. You will recruit, train and manage volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds, helping to bring new people into the museum and supporting them to find their place. Our volunteers help with the day-to-day running of the museum, so this role makes a real difference to every visitor.
It also supports our aim to attract more local, national and international visitors and members, and to reach a younger audience.
We receive no government subsidy, so our volunteers play a vital part in our work. You will help make sure they feel valued, supported and well trained.
Job RequirementsThe role is wide-ranging, and the selected candidate will be required to:
- Recruit volunteers from the local community and beyond, using a range of channels

- Match volunteers' skills and interests to roles, and keep role descriptions up to date

- Work with colleagues across the museum to identify new volunteering opportunities
- Oversee volunteer wellbeing, safeguarding and health and safety requirements
- Recognise and celebrate volunteers' contributions
- Report on volunteer numbers, impact and feedback
- Be an integral part of the staff team and support colleagues as needed.
Essential:
- Experience of recruiting, supporting or managing volunteers
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with people of all ages and backgrounds
- Organised, with good attention to detail and record keeping
- Confident written and verbal communication
- Ability to plan and deliver training
- Good IT skills, including email and spreadsheets
- Enthusiasm for heritage, history or the arts
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion
Desirable:
- Experience in a museum, heritage or cultural setting
- Understanding of volunteer policy and safeguarding practice
