Reports to: VP of Accounting

Location: Cottonwood Heights, Utah (Hybrid - 3x/week in-office)

Backcountry is in an exciting stretch of growth, and you will be at the center of it. As Senior Accountant
, you will own key areas of consolidated financials across our brands, working with enterprise systems, large data sets, and directly alongside the VP of Accounting and CFO. As new businesses join the family, you will help integrate them and build the controls and processes that scale with us.

In your first 6–12 months, success looks like a clean, on-time close for your areas, acquired entities integrated smoothly, key controls documented and strengthened, AI and automation built into your workflows, and Staff Accountants who are stronger because of your coaching.

This is a lean team. You will own a lot, move fast, and make decisions with full end-to-end responsibility.

  • Prepare consolidated internal and external financial statements across Backcountry's brands
  • Perform flux and trend analytics to assess and explain changes in results
  • Lead, train, and mentor Staff Accountants; review their journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analyses
  • Own key areas of the balance sheet and P&L, including variances and their forward-looking implications
  • Prepare the weekly cash flow and present it to the CFO, with a clear view of how the inputs and outputs reflect Backcountry's liquidity
  • Maintain and balance the consolidation system
  • Lead the accounting integration of acquired businesses, including onboarding entities to the ERP and consolidation, aligning accounting policies, and supporting purchase accounting
  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations; substantiate financial transactions and prepare account roll-forwards
  • Design, document, and test internal controls that scale with growth
  • Build well-documented close processes and drive improvements that shorten the close
  • Apply AI and automation to streamline reconciliations, analysis, and reporting, and help the team adopt these tools
  • Identify, research, and explain variances between actual and forecasted performance
  • Stay current on accounting standards, M&A accounting, and emerging finance technology
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting
  • 3+ years of accounting experience in public accounting and/or corporate accounting at a multi-entity company
  • Strong command of US GAAP, account reconciliations, and the month-end close
  • Experience reviewing others' work or training staff
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large data sets
  • Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • CPA or active CPA candidate
  • Big 4 or national public accounting experience
  • Experience with Oracle Net Suite or another enterprise ERP and consolidation tool
  • Experience with M&A integration or SOX controls
  • Hands-on experience using AI or automation tools in accounting workflows
  • A passion for the outdoors

The people who do best here are builders. They take ownership, move fast, and want to see the direct impact of their work.

  • Cross-Functional Impact: Your work on consolidated financials, M&A integration, and cash flow reporting directly informs decisions made by senior leadership across the organization.
  • Skill Building: Deepen expertise in M&A accounting, consolidation, and AI-driven automation while coaching Staff Accountants and shaping how the team operates.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Own your areas of the close, design the controls, build the processes, and drive the automation — you will see your work run in production, not sit in a queue.
  • Competitive Benefits: Paid time off policies, 401(k) match, medical/dental/vision and a variety of supplemental policies, and employee discounts across our portfolio of brands.
  • Recruiter Screen - A 30-minute conversation with our recruiting team to align on the role, your background, and what you are looking for.
  • Hiring Manager Interview - Conversation with the VP of Accounting focused on your accounting experience, approach to the close, and team leadership style.
