Job Description
WSP is seeking an Associate Structural Engineer to join our Utah Transportation Structures team
. This position is based in our South Jordan, UT office.
This opportunity involves providing support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers for all phases of transportation infrastructure structures projects, mainly in support of the public sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with research, concept development, design, and construction support for load‑bearing structures such as bridges, retaining walls, overhead signs, drainage structures, and other roadway facilities. You will ensure that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality.

- Review existing conditions and determine physical requirements for structure work, developing alternative structure types.
- Perform basic professional structural engineering work, including research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction specifications.
- Assist with modeling, designing, and detailing to account for safety and functionality of end‑users and vehicles.
- Help verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance for structural soundness against environmental or human loads.
- Write technical reports summarizing research findings and conclusions, generating accurate documentation using sketches, calculations, electronic systems, spreadsheets, software, and 2D/3D illustrations.
- Assist technical staff and project managers with risk identification and assessment, offering input and analysis for design concepts, construction, mitigation, and remediation activities.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to execute project work.
- Assist with work plan preparation and coordination of site work.
- Complete training on assigned tasks.
- Collaborate with other engineers, professionals, and infrastructure authorities on federal, state, regional, local, and privately funded improvement and development projects.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 1–3 years of relevant post‑education experience.
- Knowledge of structural engineering principles, practices, processes, and design/build application to project work‑related issues.
- Familiarity with infrastructure planning, rehabilitation, and new design.
- Familiarity with relevant structural and civil construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with others and expressing ideas professionally to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Self‑leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet business objectives.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, physics, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
- Experience with discipline‑specific design software (e.g., Bentley Open Roads/Open Bridge, CSIBridge, MDX, LPile).
- Experience with AASHTO specifications, including LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, Guide Specifications for LRFD Seismic Bridge Design, and Manual for Bridge Evaluation.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Ability to work schedules conducive to project requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.
- Engineer in Training certification.
