In this role, you will be responsible for assigned project designs, coordination, client communications, and associated construction administration. Your responsibilities also include the supervision of the staff assigned to the projects, ensuring staff utilization, overseeing the work performed by the assigned staff, managing the mechanical project budget/time, and ensuring the design is completed within the project design schedule.
Job Responsibilities- Application of Knowledge of Building Systems (Conceptual Design)
- Ensures understanding and compliance with owner's building program requirements and facility or corporate standards related to mechanical and plumbing systems design
- Confirms and reviews applicable codes and standards such as the International Building Code Council (Mechanical, Plumbing, Gas, Fire), ASHRAE Standards (90.1, 62, and 15), and NFPA
- Establishes and documents the mechanical and plumbing systems basis of design, providing clarification, qualifications, and design assumptions
- Works with the building owner to ensure cost-effective systems/products are utilized
- Works with construction management to validate construction cost and provide value engineering options as needed
- Knowing when to obtain support from a Lead Mechanical Engineer or Senior Mechanical Engineer
- Design
- Assist in establishing building envelope thermal insulation values for energy code compliance and cooling/heating load calculations
- Perform and document engineering calculations related to mechanical and plumbing systems for selecting code-compliant systems and equipment
- Perform systems and equipment selections, layout and sizing
- Draft or oversee drafting of mechanical and plumbing systems with appropriate drawing detail for design completeness and cost
- Schedule mechanical and plumbing equipment with appropriate accessories and remarks
- Develop control drawings (schematics, points list, sequence of operation) for environmental control and system performance
- Ensure complete and accurate specifications
- Construction Support
- Assist with problem-solving for field oversights
- Shop drawing and submittal reviews
- Perform field inspections and produce reports with the Group Lead or Senior Mechanical Engineer
- Assist with photograph reviews
- Assist with RFI responses
- Project Management
- Oversee the work performed by assigned staff on the projects
- Planning, Scheduling, and Profitability
- Monitor design package inclusions (pricing documents, SD, DD, and CD)
- Work with the project Lead Mechanical Engineer to meet project schedules and provide complete documents for each submission
- Design projects within provided design budgets and track additional hours when scope expands
- Professional Development
- Maintain required licensing CEUs
- Proactively pursue in-house or external training to maintain design skills
- Leadership
- Manage assigned staff on projects
- Travel
- Up to 20% annually
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university
- 5 to 8 years of relevant experience
- Licensed Professional Engineer - Mechanical Engineering
- Knowledge of Building Systems HVAC and/or Plumbing Design
- Experience utilizing Revit for 3D design
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, this position requires ordinary ambulatory abilities to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and lift/carry light to medium weights (10–50 pounds). Requires good hand-eye coordination and dexterity, ability to operate equipment, and visual acuity for reading and data entry. The role commonly involves sitting, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing.
