Process Design Engineer

Marathon Petroleum Company LP has an opening for a Tech Services – Process Optimization Group – Process Design Engineer at its refinery located in Salt Lake City, Utah. This position is part of an Engineering Technical Ladder with multiple levels. The successful candidate will be placed at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications. We are seeking a motivated, team-oriented Process Design Engineer to provide technical support for the site and to support new project development and implementation.

This includes identifying short- and long-term process changes to improve unit(s) profitability and optimize efficiency. This position will be based out of Marathon Petroleum’s Salt Lake City Refinery in Salt Lake City, UT.

• Contributes to refinery/organizational long-term strategy development and identifies opportunities to increase throughput, improve yields, increase reliability and optimize energy use in process units.
• Develops process designs for new projects and unit modifications, including PFDs, P&IDs, and heat/material balances.
• Performs process simulations and calculations to support equipment sizing, hydraulic analysis, and energy optimization as well as lead economic analysis and establish project rate of return.
• Collaborates with project engineers, operations, and external vendors to ensure alignment of design with operational needs.
• Prepares process design packages and support HAZOPs, LOPA studies, and other safety reviews.
• Provides technical leadership during project execution, including design reviews, construction support, and commissioning.
• Stays current with industry standards and best practices to ensure high-quality, cost-effective designs.
• Serves as mentor for less experienced engineers.

• Bachelor’s degree (or above) in chemical engineering from an accredited institution.
• Four (4) years or more of experience in process design within refining or heavy industry required.
• Must be authorized to work in the US without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

• 15 years of post-degree engineering experience in a refinery or chemical plant focused on process design work
• Proficiencies:
  Process simulation (HYSIS, Petro Sim, etc), technical writing, PSM knowledge, and a strong understanding of refinery economics and project justification
