Job Overview

Milestone Bank is seeking an experienced, full-time ABL Underwriter & Portfolio Manager to join our team. This role will focus on small and lower middle market asset-based lending (ABL) transactions. The candidate is responsible for reviewing the creditworthiness of commercial ABL credits and assessing the risk associated with extending credit. As a key decision-maker, this individual will determine whether applicants represent acceptable credit risks and loans can be repaid through a risk assessment of borrowers, guarantors, and available collateral ensuring sound credit decisions that align with the bank’s risk appetite and strategic goals.

The candidate will also handle post-closing account management for an assigned portfolio of accounts, providing both customer service functions and credit monitoring and oversight, ensuring borrower compliance with loan covenants and predicting deterioration in financial or collateral conditions. The role also includes exposure to regulatory examinations and internal audits, requiring the candidate to maintain thorough documentation and demonstrate compliance with credit policies and risk management standards.

Prior experience in ABL, factoring, or C&I lending structured under a borrowing base is required. Additional prior experience in SBA/government-guaranteed lending is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate credit risk on new ABL applications, typically up to $5 million, across a wide variety of industries.
  • Perform initial and ongoing due diligence on business borrowers, guarantors, and available collateral using various data sources.
  • Review, spread, and analyze business and personal financial statements and tax returns to assess creditworthiness on incoming business borrowers and to ensure ongoing credit performance of an assigned portfolio of accounts.
  • Gather and review periodic borrowing base and compliance certificates for compliance with loan covenants.
  • Compile and review trend cards for ongoing credit assessment of an assigned portfolio of accounts.
  • Research and examine credit risks, assess credit history, and articulate support for credit decisions.
  • Complete detailed credit write-ups outlining the rationale for extending credit.
  • Review and analyze pre- and post-funding field examinations (collateral audits) and incorporate findings into pre- and post-funding credit decisioning.
  • Verbally present underwriting analysis to credit committee members, clearly articulating the strengths and risks of each transaction.
  • Ensure financial analysis and credit decisions comply with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Take initiative and be resourceful in establishing and modifying underwriting forms, templates, and credit procedures that ensure best practices in ABL credit management.
  • Utilize expertise and resourcefulness in gathering information from non-traditional sources (e.g., county/city records, articles, bank/trade references).
  • Understand, identify, and consider mitigants to credit exceptions and items that fall short of guidelines.
  • Maintain confidence and autonomy in decision-making, especially in gray areas.
  • Possess approval authority and make independent business decisions with minimal supervision.
  • Exercise creativity and prudence in structuring deals and proposing solutions.
  • Maintain high levels of accuracy and performance in a fast‑paced, multi‑tasking environment.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of credit bureau reports including Experian, Trans Union, Experian Business, D&B, and Pay Net.
  • Collaborate effectively with sales and documentation teams to resolve application issues and missing information.
  • Interact directly with customers throughout the application process.
  • Prepare reports on financial metrics for leadership, shareholders, and the Board of Directors.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to relationship‑building across departments.
  • Adapt to continuous change and demonstrate a willingness to support other departments.
