We are looking for a Financial Manager II to support our Salt Lake City Fire Department team!
Position TitleFinancial Manager II
About The PositionUnder the supervision of the Department Head, this position plays a key role in guiding the Fire Department’s financial strategy and operations. This position is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting functions, including budgeting, financial reporting, cost analysis, and internal payroll.
Beyond finance, this role provides leadership and coordination for a variety of administrative functions such as grants and contract management, inventory and asset control, auditing, purchasing, and payroll oversight.
This is a senior management position requiring critical decision‑making skills and responsibilities necessary to inform, advise and assist the Department Head, executive leader(s), and elected officials with policy and financial decision making. This position may supervise multiple staff members.
The ideal candidate is a detail‑oriented, forward‑thinking professional who enjoys improving processes, supporting teams, and ensuring strong fiscal stewardship across the department.
Position Salary RangeE34 - $90,017/yr. to $122,909/yr. The established market rate for this position is $122,909/yr.

Key Responsibilities- At the direction of the Department Head, evaluates financial reports, plans, capital expenditures, billing/assessments, revenue management, operating records and financial statements.
- Directs and/or assists in the preparation of special studies, reports, analyses and recommendations in areas such as budgets, forecasts, financial systems/plans, capital improvement planning, internal controls, legislative requirements, statistical reports and business forecasts for management use.
- Makes recommendations to Department Head (or designees) to improve the organization by providing reports or suggested changes to reach current and future goals.
- Ensures the timely and effective tracking of allocated resources, responsibilities and timelines associated with the department objectives. Assists with monitoring progress on metrics.
- Supervises and communicates with Finance staff to carry out varied Department Head directives and fiscal activities as they relate to operational, program, and capital improvement budgets. This includes accounting, payroll, audits, and policy oversight.
- Troubles‑shoots department and division budgetary challenges and assists in formulating efficient problem‑solving techniques.
- Maintains productive and professional working relationship with City administrators, departmental members, and private sector businesses.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration or a closely related field and a minimum of six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience.
- Thorough knowledge of principals of public organizational management and public administration as it relates to public and governmental accounting, control of accrual, and cash flow budgeting.
