Job Summary

The Licon Laboratory at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a research technician to study gene expression and differentiation in coccidian parasites. The position requires a basic conceptual understanding of the applicable science and independent judgement. The successful candidate will launch investigations into Toxoplasma’s sexual cycle and gain experience with a wide range of techniques, including fixed and live‑cell microscopy, functional genomics, and parasite/mammalian cell culture.

As an early hire in a new lab, the candidate will help shape laboratory culture and practices, working closely with the PI to outfit and organize new BSL1 and BSL2 research spaces, manage host cell stocks, and aid in the recruitment and training of new lab members.

Responsibilities
  • Perform aseptic cell culture techniques to manage media preparation, passaging, and cryopreservation/thawing of mammalian host cell stocks.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of the laboratory’s host cell line inventory.
  • Contribute to the documentation and optimization of cell culture protocols.
  • Order and manage common research supplies (gloves, gases, plastics).
  • Ensure proper functioning of laboratory equipment, including widefield epifluorescence and inverted routine microscopes, centrifuges, tissue culture incubators, cryogenic storage tanks, and freezers.
  • Aid the PI in onboarding new trainees and employees.
  • Oversee general housekeeping and lab upkeep, including management of hazardous waste removal.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce safe laboratory procedures.
  • Assist in ongoing molecular‑genetic studies on Toxoplasma differentiation and gene regulation, primarily through genetic manipulation, culture, characterization, and documentation of parasite strains.
  • Accurately record experimental protocols and data in laboratory notebooks and electronic databases.
  • Assist with basic data organization and analysis.
  • Prepare presentation slides and present data in group meetings.
Minimum Qualifications

Requires at least 1 year of related experience. One year of higher education can be substituted for one year of directly related work experience (e.g., a bachelor’s degree equals 4 years of directly related work experience).

Preferences

Preference will be given to applicants with prior laboratory research experience, particularly in aseptic technique/mammalian cell culture. Competency with computational data analysis also will be considered favorably but is not required.
