Medical Assistant - MA, EMT, AEMT - Resource Nursing - Full Time

University of Utah Health is seeking a full‑time Medical Assistant with MA, EMT or AEMT credentials to provide assistive care to patients, support licensed staff, perform basic healthcare tasks, and assist with clerical functions.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures (record temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure and responses to medical history questions).
  • Report all observed patient concerns and changes in condition to licensed staff.
  • Perform CLIA waived laboratory tests as identified by the department and report results.
  • Perform additional skills such as suture removal, straight catheterization and injections (IM, subq, intra‑dermal).
  • Act as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination and assist with procedures.
  • Monitor and clean assigned patient examination rooms, unit areas and unit equipment; report outdated supplies, stock levels and restock set levels.
  • Answer telephones, forward telephone messages and, under direction of licensed staff, schedule appointments, procedures and diagnostic tests.
  • Assist with routine clerical functions such as filing patient records, locating and compiling department charts, obtaining medical records from other providers and entering charges for billing purposes.
  • Attend and complete mandatory education including infection prevention and control, safety, CPR, equipment usage and procedures per hospital and department policies.
  • May perform patient phlebotomies in accordance with clinic procedures and physician orders after specialized training.
  • May apply leads and monitor for diagnostic procedures such as EKG and ultrasound scan under direct supervision of licensed personnel.
  • May assist inpatient and family education by providing educational material and general health information to patients and family members.
  • May assist with transportation of patients to ancillary departments or inpatient units as directed by licensed staff.
  • May instruct in Basic Life Support (BLS) requirements.
  • May perform IV access.
  • May perform other duties based on department assigned.
  • Work rotating schedules, variable hours, weekends, nights, holidays as required; regular, reliable and punctual attendance during shifts is essential.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
  • Availability to work variable and rotating shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in a 24/7 patient care environment.
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job as outlined above.
  • Phlebotomy skills.
  • Human relations and effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in specific clinic’s specialty skills within six weeks of hire; specialty skills may not be performed until after basic competency testing.
  • Physical endurance: ability to stand on feet for long periods, move and lift patients, and handle equipment.
Qualifications – Licenses Required
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system; credential obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following:
    • Current Clinical Medical Assistant certification through NHA.
    • Current Advanced EMT certification with the State of Utah.
    • Current certification to practice as a paramedic in the State of Utah.
    • Current certification as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT.
    • Current certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT.
    • Current credential in A ‑OE (Assessment‑Based Recognition in Order Entry) through AAMA.
    • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA.
    • Current certification as an NRCMA‑MA through the National Association for Health Professionals.
Additional License Requirements

Additional license requirements may be determined by the hiring department.

Qualifications – Preferred

Preferred qualifications may include additional relevant certifications or experience.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

Work may involve lifting up to 50 pounds, moving patients or equipment; exposure to infectious diseases, contaminated bodily fluids, blood and needles may occur. Physical demands include standing, walking, lifting, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, crouching and frequent manual dexterity.
