This position is responsible for performing all aspects of cardiac sonography, which includes transthoracic, two dimensional m‑mode and doppler procedures, transesophageal procedures, pharmacologic/non‑pharmacologic stress echocardiograms, and imaging procedures. This position provides direct patient care and may be required to access and administer medications within their scope of practice and according to state law.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinates and prioritizes ordered exams.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with medical staff including, but not limited to, physicians, APC's, medical fellows and residents, and other medical staff.
  • Collects medical information and patient histories.
  • Performs cardiac ultrasound exams in accordance to department and overseeing accredited body's outlined protocols and procedures.
  • Participates in the training of echo cardiographic techniques and procedures.
  • Cleans and disinfects transesophageal probes and other equipment and decontaminates the exam area.
  • Performs quantitative measurements and calculations of the acquired data and provides preliminary reports.
  • Maintains logs of patient data and files reports.
  • Orders and restocks supplies.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and human relation skills.
Qualifications

Must meet all eligibility requirements for the Cardiac Sonographer I. Two (2) years of experience as a Cardiac Sonographer. Verified competency in five (5) or more of the following areas:
Complex Cardiac Cases (Impella, ECMO, VAD);
Structural Heart Cases (TAVR, Mitral Clips, Watchman, ASD/PFO closures);
Stress Echo (ESE and DSE); TEE; IV Certification and Competency;
Basic Congenital Echo;
Echos in Cath Lab (ICE and pericardiocentesis).

Licenses Required
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • One of the following
    • Current certification as a Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International.
    • Current certification as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer with an Adult Echocardiography (RDCS‑AE) specialty through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

* Additional license requirements as determined by the hiring department.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands
  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.
