The Department of Commerce is looking for an organized, level-headed, hard-working, analytical professional to fill a vacant Consumer Protection Investigator position. * Telework is not available during training (a minimum of 12 months), then up to 3 days of telework may be approved if eligibility requirements are met.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

In this position, as a neutral fact-finder, you will conduct investigations into allegations of individuals and businesses involved in activities that are in violation of Utah's consumer protection laws and regulations . You will work independently under general supervision and perform a full range of investigative assignments. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducting investigations. Interviewing consumers, business owners, witnesses, and other parties. Collecting and reviewing relevant evidence.
  • Maintaining detailed records, typing case notes, preparing reports, and drafting legal documents.
  • Interacting with consumers, businesses, attorneys, and other government agencies.
  • Ensuring compliance with state statutes and rules.
  • Facilitating resolutions of consumer complaints.
  • Initiating legal action and negotiating settlement agreements.
  • Presenting the Division’s case in administrative hearings, including calling witnesses and presenting evidence.
  • Acting as an expert witness in administrative and judicial proceedings.
  • Tactfully and calmly handling conflict.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

We're looking for a professional who possesses:

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, including fast and accurate typing.
  • The ability to effectively balance multiple priorities and cases in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to accurately determine legal violations.
  • Proficiency in using various computer, software, and web-based applications.
  • Meticulous organizational skills for task and file management.
  • A proven track record of handling sensitive data with the utmost confidentiality.
  • The capacity to navigate confrontational and difficult situations with sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to touch type, quickly and accurately, without looking at the keyboard.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
  • Adept at crafting clear, organized, and grammatically-sound written content.
  • Ability to confidently deliver audience-appropriate presentations.
PREFERRED
  • Investigative experience or equivalent professional experience involving gathering and analyzing facts and evidence.
  • Experience reading and analyzing statutes and other laws.
  • Experience doing case work and managing a caseload within the last 10 years.
  • Experience and ability to interview various parties to gather facts and/or evidence.
  • Bachelor's Degree or Higher, or equivalent experience of four or more years of accomplishing long-term tasks and learning new information and skills, and applying them in your job duties.
  • Preference may be given to current Utah Department of Commerce employees.
