Ameri Corps Service Member RoleThis position is a service member role employed by the federal Ameri Corps program. It is not an employee of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and is not eligible for IRC benefits. Service members will complete 900 hours of service within 12 months (average 17‑18 hours per week) while receiving a living stipend of $15,300 paid biweekly at $586.45. Upon completion of the 900 hours, members are eligible for an Education Award of $3,697.50.

Salt Lake County’s Most Vulnerable Populations Ameri Corps Program focuses on reducing systematic inequities and bridging gaps for vulnerable populations such as youth, individuals experiencing homelessness, and those involved in the criminal justice system. The program engages adults in public service to help others meet critical community needs.
IRC BackgroundFounded in 1933, IRC is a leading non‑sectarian organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression. Historically IRC resettles approximately 10,000 refugees per year, and in Utah serves about 2,000 refugees annually through nearly 20 programs.
About the YALL ProgramStarted in 2021, YALL (Youth, Agriculture, Leadership, and Learning) is a New Roots program focused on supporting and educating refugee and new American youth ages 13‑18 on food justice, agriculture, leadership, and related topics.
Scope of PositionThe Youth Agriculture Ameri Corps will play a central role in implementing youth programming, assisting in planning and teaching activities, mentoring youth, and contributing to the land management of New Roots community gardens and teaching spaces.
Key Responsibilities Youth Agriculture Program (70%)- Coordinate with the YALL team to deliver educational workshops and facilitate activities in agriculture, fieldwork, team building, leadership skills, food justice, community service, and other program activities.
- Assist in running a youth‑led CSA program, including overseeing outreach, harvests, packaging, delivery, and customer relations.
- Assist in maintaining youth gardens, including crop planning, planting, harvesting, and upkeep.
- Act as a mentor to a diverse group of youth in the YALL cohort and provide support in their personal development.
- Participate in YALL program meetings and development activities, including weekly check‑ins.
- Regularly communicate with YALL participants to coordinate participation in activities.
- Assist the New Roots team in maintaining garden and farm sites, including cultivation, weed and invasive species mitigation, infrastructure projects, and irrigation systems.
- Maintain functional garden sites and positive partner organization relationships.
- Support gardener communications, orientations, and meetings.
- Conduct end‑of‑year feedback surveys and manage clothing/food drives.
- Help in greenhouse operations, including open office hours, education, and plant starter cultivation.
- Assist in setting up, customer support, and coordination of the Redwood Farmers Market (occasional Saturdays).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Reflect and develop goals regarding personal development, leadership skills, and interest areas.
