  • Identifies mechanical issues in vehicles and equipment through inspection and testing.
  • Performs necessary repairs and routine maintenance on various vehicle and equipment systems, including engines, brakes, transmissions, and hydraulics.
  • Oversees the work of mechanics and apprentices, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Manages and orders parts and supplies to ensure that essential items are available for repairs.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs, maintenance services, and parts used for each vehicle and small engine equipment.
  • Ensures that all repairs meet safety and quality standards before vehicles or equipment are returned to use.
  • Stays updated on industry regulations and ensures that all work complies with safety standards and environmental regulations.
  • Keeps current with new technologies and repair techniques through ongoing education and training.
  • Works with other mechanics and technicians to resolve complex mechanical issues efficiently.
  • Assists small engine mechanics with regular maintenance and repairs on a variety of equipment, including lawn mowers, trimmers, and utility vehicles. This includes tasks like changing oil, replacing filters, sharpening blades, and addressing mechanical issues to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Ensures, through appropriate assignments, the cleanliness of the premises and the safety of all personnel.

  • Proficiency in using various mechanical and power tools, machine tools, measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, ohmmeters), oscilloscopes, cutting and welding equipment, brake lathes, valve grinders, and maintenance tools.
  • Ability to understand and operate from schematics and flow charts.
  • Strong skills in verbal and written communication, mathematics, and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in using computers and general office equipment, maintaining inventory records, state inspection records, IM records, and communicating with the Utah State Highway Patrol and the Salt Lake County Health Department.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage subordinates to create a positive and productive work environment.
  • Knowledge of current and upcoming developments in the field through continuing education, manufacturing seminars, and other resources.
  • Ability to effectively supervise tasks that are sometimes complex and require analytical thinking and problem solving.
  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Requires a current, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires two years of formal training in aspects of motor vehicle mechanics or grounds-care equipment mechanics.
  • Requires a current Utah Highway Patrol Safety Inspection Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires a current Salt Lake County Vehicle Emissions Certificate or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire.?
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year of journeyman experience in a related field.
  • Supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Creates and monitors maintenance schedules.
  • Makes decisions as to repair or replace in a variety of complex situations involving quality and safety.
  • Empowered to determine whether specific equipment is dangerous to the user and remove the equipment or neutralize it in place.
  • Assists in hiring, promotion, retention, and performance review decisions upon request from the Foreman.
  • Determines maintenance and repair needs for expensive shop machinery and equipment.
  • Interacts with maintenance employees, custodians, inspectors, contractors, district and school administration, vendors, and the public.
  • Supervises the day-to-day work of related staff, not exceeding 8 full-time employees.
  • The staffing may temporarily increase to accommodate up to 10 additional temporary/seasonal employees.

  • Monitors the progress of apprentices assigned to ensure that District apprenticeship and training standards are maintained.
