Airport Electronic Security Technician

Under general supervision of a technical systems program manager or assigned manager, the technician assists in the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of electronic or security related programs in an airport environment. The role focuses on performing skilled security technician work in the service, repair, alteration, installation, and maintenance of security-related systems. Immediate operational, security, and/or safety concerns are resolved in a timely manner.

A preventive maintenance program for tracking repairs and testing is maintained, and the technician assists with electronic hardware for various aviation-related systems.

About the Position

As an Airport Electronic Security Technician you’ll play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the safety of airport facilities. You’ll install, service, and troubleshoot advanced electronic systems—including access control, intrusion alarms, and fire protection systems—to ensure they operate at peak reliability. The ideal candidate has working knowledge of fire alarm and sprinkler systems (or is willing to obtain State of Utah certification) and a keen eye for precision and problem‑solving.

Typical Duties
  • Perform service and installation of access control, intrusion alarm, security entrance devices, fire systems, and other security/life safety systems.
  • Respond to emergency situations during and after hours, including holidays, to resolve immediate security and life safety concerns.
  • Align, adjust, repair, maintain, and calibrate delicate instruments and equipment per manufacturer and department specifications.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, troubleshoot systems, and perform repairs as necessary.
  • Assist in the development of training programs for other employees.
  • Upgrade and add to system to increase functionality, usability, and reliability.
  • Coordinate with administration and other trades to complete projects and work orders efficiently.
  • Prepare documentation in various written and electronic formats (e.g., daily paperwork/log, time and materials, key material records, key inventory).
  • Provide input for the development and implementation of preventive maintenance schedules for assigned electronic systems.
  • Maintain associated records and inventories; prepare specifications for repair parts, replacement instruments, and test equipment; recommend budgeting for these items.
  • Perform a variety of highly skilled mechanical, locksmith, electrical, and electronic work at the journey level.
  • Understand, interpret, and control a master key system; implement work for the airport, airlines, and comply with federal regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics or a closely related field plus one (1) year paid experience in the operation of a computerized process control, communications, security system, or similar system. Education and experience may be substituted one for the other on a year-for-year basis.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex and/or technical sketches, drawings, blueprints, work requests, and various project documents as required to perform assigned tasks.
  • Ability to interact effectively with supervisors, co‑workers, airport tenants and employees, operators, department support staff, suppliers, and the general public.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license or Utah driving privilege card.
Desired Qualifications
  • Candidate should have a working knowledge of building fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems. If not already certified, candidate will need to obtain State of Utah certification for inspecting fire extinguishers, testing/inspecting, and basic maintenance of building fire alarm and fire sprinkler systems. Knowledge of heat trace systems is desirable but not required.
Working Conditions
  • Moderate physical activity; required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights (30 to 75 lbs.).
  • Uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching and bending. Exposure to hazards associated with confined spaces, high voltages, heat, cold, noise and other elements associated with an airport environment.
