SUMMARY OF POSITION
The primary function of the Locomotive Engineer is to maintain responsibility over the physical operation and safety of the locomotive. All train crew employees are responsible for strict adherence to safety guidelines and for completing their duties with integrity and professionalism.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEligible for $1,000 New Hire Bonus
- Always ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations, including FRA guidance.
- Review instructions from dispatchers and yardmasters, and discuss these with locomotive engineer and train crew.
- Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departure.
- Accurately receive and transmit information by radio and telephone.
- Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists.
- Assist and instruct train crews to couple/uncouple cars, operate switches, and perform minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses.
- Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars.
- Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
- Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems.
- Make precise adjustments in moving controls of the locomotive or other vehicles to exact positions.
- Respond quickly and accurately to visual symbols, signals, and displays.
- Safely maintain responsibility for safe and efficient operation of the locomotive.
- Manipulate throttle and brake controls while interpreting gauges and controls.
- Manipulate valves and switches both inside and outside the cab.
- Apply and release handbrakes as required.
- Ascend and descend steps and ladders safely to access equipment.
- Take directions from conductors and brakemen.
- Line switches and perform maintenance services to the locomotive (e.g., brake shoes, oil, sand, fuel).
- Comply with all new and outstanding railroad instructions regarding train operation and federal regulations regarding air brakes.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by operations and/or management.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least 2 years of verifiable work experience and/or college; railroad industry experience strongly preferred.
- Must pass all required assessments and a background screening.
- Must pass random drug and alcohol testing; no driving violations involving alcohol or drugs within the past 3 years.
- Knowledge and skill in using hand tools (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, measuring tapes) and power tools (portable grinders, rail saws, spike pullers, track wrench machines).
- Experience reading and comprehending safety manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, schematics, and procedure manuals.
- Must meet the physical requirements of the position (e.g., climbing, lifting, standing for long periods).
- Position requires a flexible work schedule, occasional overtime, and a 24‑hour on‑call schedule.

Locomotive Engineers must meet and maintain color vision and hearing requirements as described in FRA regulations. The physical nature of the work includes climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motion. Employees work in confined and awkward spaces, often outdoors in extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions, and in proximity to moving equipment.
Appropriate PPE (hearing protection, safety‑toe boots, safety glasses) must be worn.
