The Angelo State University Natalie Zan Ryan Department of English and Modern Languages is seeking a tenure‑track Assistant Professor of English, pre‑1865 American literature. The position also includes teaching core curriculum courses in writing and literature, advanced undergraduate courses, and graduate courses for the online English MA program. The successful candidate will be broadly trained in American literature beyond their research specialization.
Preference will be given to additional teaching/research interests in Mexican American literature, African American literature, and/or Native American literature.
Job Duties
The dedicated educator and scholar will teach a range of courses across the English curriculum, including:
- First‑Year Composition
- Sophomore‑level American Literature
The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Responsibilities include:
- Engaging in scholarly research and publishing in the candidate’s area of specialization
- Advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
- Participating actively in departmental, university, and community service
- Contributing to curriculum development and program enhancement
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated expertise in English composition and American literature
- Strong pedagogical skills with experience teaching first‑year composition and literature courses
- Ability to design and deliver engaging instruction across undergraduate and graduate levels, including online formats
- Knowledge of current trends and scholarship in English studies and the candidate’s area of specialization
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to mentor and advise students effectively
- Commitment to inclusive teaching practices and fostering a diverse learning environment
- Capacity to contribute to departmental, university, and community service initiatives
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills
- Ability to collaborate professionally with colleagues and participate in academic governance
- Ph.D. in English or a closely related field (ABD considered with expected completion by start date)
- Evidence of effective teaching at the college level
- A record of or potential for scholarly publication
- Experience with online instruction is preferred
