Position: WATER PRODUCTION PLANT OPERATOR (CLASS D)

Position will be open until filled.

We are currently seeking: a water production plant operator to join our team and perform all activities associated with operating and maintaining chemical treatment processes, mechanical functions, and labor operations of a surface water treatment facility, ground water production facilities, and water storage facilities.

Your responsibilities will include
  • Monitoring and operating water treatment plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, filters, gauges, and meters to ensure proper functioning of the water plant and well sites.
  • Monitoring and operating water distribution system equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, gauges, and meters, to ensure the proper functioning of the water distribution system.
  • Monitoring chemical feed systems, chlorine, ammonia, Ph, turbidity as well as other plant process parameters.
  • Monitoring water storage tank levels and distribution pressures and makes adjustments needed to meet consumer demand for water.
  • Collecting water samples and interpreting lab results to make process adjustments.
  • Maintaining daily records and monthly reports on water operations.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe work area in and around all the plant processes and buildings.
  • Completing preventative and corrective maintenance work orders on pumps, motors, gearboxes and other equipment in a timely manner.
  • Informing supervisor of all problems, deviations, and unfamiliar situations.
  • Adhering to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Assisting other coworkers as needed.
  • Hours:

    Thursday through Sunday, rotating shift.
  • Regular and timely attendance is required.

    Requirements and Skills
    • Interpreting and applying technical standards and procedures, state rules and regulations, and City policies and procedures.
    • Reading technical documents and schematics.
    • Performing basic Water plant operation activities.
    • Reading and interpreting gauges and recording devices.
    • Performing and interpreting basic laboratory tests.
    • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands. Promoting and enforcing safe work practices. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers. Effective verbal and written communications.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    High School diploma or equivalent; and two years’ experience in the operation and maintenance of a Water treatment system, preferably with the City of San Angelo; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Required Licenses or Certifications
    • Must possess a valid Texas Driver License with a good driving record.
    • Applicants with an out-of-state driver license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.
    • Minimum Class D - Water Treatment Plant Operator license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) or acquisition of license within 6 months from hire is required for position eligibility.
    Physical Demands / Work Environment
    • Work is performed primarily outdoors where exposure includes, but may not be limited to, dust, dirt, fumes and loud noises in inclement weather conditions.
    • Routine activities require working around electromechanical and rotating equipment.
    • Work may include handling dangerous/toxic chemicals with appropriate personal protective equipment.
    • Work is performed in Water Utilities Department facilities; required to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
